PROVIDENCE, R.I.--Memphis men’s basketball freshman James Wiseman has been named to The Associated Press Preseason All-America Team, a day after Memphis was selected No. 14 in the AP Preseason Top 25 Poll.
 
Joining Wiseman on the squad is consensus pick Cassius Winston of Michigan State, Markus Howard of Marquette, Jordan Nwora of Louisville and Seton Hall’s Myles Powell.
 
Wiseman becomes the second player from The American to be selected to the AP Preseason All-America Team, following Louisville’s Russ Smith ahead of the 2013-14 season.
 
The 7-1 center was the 2019 Gatorade National Basketball Player of the Year, rated as the No. 1 recruit in the nation and was part of Memphis’ No. 1 recruiting class according to the long-running Recruiting Services Combined index.
 
Wiseman averaged 25.8 points, 14.8 rebounds, 5.5 blocks and 1.3 steals per game in his senior season at Memphis East High School. He was named The American’s Preseason Rookie of the Year and tabbed to The American Preseason All-Conference Team.
 
Also receiving votes for the AP Preseason All-America Team was Jarron Cumberland of Cincinnati, who was named the conference’s Preseason Player of the Year.
