Cincinnati 63, Ball State 56
University of Cincinnati women's basketball got back on track Saturday with a 63-56 win over the visiting Ball State Cardinals at Fifth Third Arena.
With the score tied at 51 with four minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Bearcats (2-2) manufactured a quick, 6-0 run over the next minute and a half and proceed to outscore the Cardinals (1-2) 12-5 over the duration of the contest to snap a two-game losing skid.
Senior guard Antoinette Miller paced UC with 14 points and 10 rebounds – as well as five assists – to notch her first double-double of the season and the fourth of her career. Junior forward IImar'I Thomas' continued her strong play with 13 points and nine rebounds. Senior forward Angel Rizor chipped in eight points, four rebounds, and five assists.
Northern Colorado 61, SMU 52
SMU women's basketball suffered its first loss of the season as they fell, 61-52, to Northern Colorado Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
Northern Colorado took advantage of a 13-0 run to take the lead and held an eight-point edge into the game's final period. SMU was able to cut into the Bear advantage to make it a five-point game in the final minute, but Northern Colorado was able to finish off its victory with some late forced turnovers.
Johnasia Cash and Amber Bacon shared the lead with 12 points apiece. The Mustangs were hampered in the final period by three of the starters having four fouls heading into the closing stretch. BriShonne Tollie chipped in eight boards and freshman Reagan Bradley led the Mustangs with four assists.
UCF 63, Stephen F. Austin 57
The UCF women's basketball team locked in defensively in a 63-57 win at Stephen F. Austin on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights (2-2) handed the Ladyjacks (2-1) just their fourth loss in the last four years at William R. Johnson Coliseum and the first since the 2017-18 campaign.
Trailing 13-11 at the end of the first quarter, UCF outscored Stephen F. Austin 15-7 in the second frame to take a 26-20 lead into the locker room. The Ladyjacks responded in the third quarter, holding a 44-43 edge at the end of the frame, but the Knights went to work in the fourth quarter. After six ties and five lead changes, Sianni Martin put UCF in front for good with 3:23 left to play and Georgia Gayle sealed the 63-57 win with a pair of free throws in the final second.
Masseny Kaba and Sianni Martin led the Knights with 12 points each. Kay Kay Wright added 10 points and dished out five assists. Georgia Gayle pulled down eight rebounds while Martin collected three steals.
UConn 83, Temple 54
Olivia Nelson-Ododa had a career-high 15 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks to lead No. 4 UConn to an 83-54 win over Temple on Sunday in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Christyn Williams scored 19 points and Megan Walker added 15 for the Huskies.
UConn (3-0) hit nine of its first 12 shots, including five 3-pointers and two three-point plays to jump out to a 25-14 lead on Temple. The Huskies led by 11 after one quarter and extended the advantage to 46-30 at the half.
Temple (3-2) was able to get within 10 in the third quarter to put some pressure on the Huskies, but UConn opened the fourth with a 15-2 run — including a nifty spin move for a layup by Williams — to put the game away.
Mia Davis led Temple with 18 points, scoring her 1,000th career point during the third quarter. She became the 25th player in program history to reach the milestone.
George Washington 64, Memphis 63
The University of Memphis women's basketball team was stunned at the buzzer, falling to George Washington, 64-63, Sunday afternoon. Memphis has a 1-3 overall record.
Despite a career-high 14 points from Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu, 13 points from Jamirah Shutes and 12 from Madison Griggs, the Tigers fell in a battle that was truly until the final buzzer.
Building on their lead, the Tigers' advantage swelled to 11 points in the third quarter, capped by a jumper from Shutes. The Colonials responded with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to three. Heading into the fourth, Memphis clung to a 48-46 lead.
Down the stretch, the teams exchanged blows, trading baskets for the final 10 minutes. Memphis pushed the lead to six points before an 11-0 run by the visitors flipped the script. The Tigers would reclaim a one-point lead on a put-back by Fankam Mendjiadeu with two seconds left, but a last-second layup from George Washington stole the game from Memphis.
Houston 82, Houston Baptist 60
The University of Houston Women's Basketball team improves to 2-2 on the season after knocking off HBU in an 82-60 decision.
Houston got out to a fast start offensively, as five Cougars got on the board in the first quarter. Dorian Branch and Tatyana Hill took charge early, taking advantage of mismatches underneath the basket and helped Houston outscore HBU 12-2 in the post. An 11-0 run by Houston offense sparked by a defensive flurry that held HBU scoreless for over three minutes would give the Cougars a 18-7 lead at the break.
Jasmyne Harris and Tatyana Hill combined for 14 of Houston's 24 third quarter points. Harris got things going from behind-the-arc, hitting two of her four three-pointers in the frame, as Hill went 3-of-4 from the field for a team-high eight points. The balanced scoring effort from the Cougars would give the squad a 57-42 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Hill led the Cougars with a career-high 19 points, Dymond Gladney added a career-high 11 points and Dorian Branch dished out a career-high seven assists.
Wichita State 69, Southern 63
Mariah McCully scored a game-high 12 points in her collegiate debut, as Wichita State was able to hold off Southern, 69-63, Sunday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State (1-2) converted on 52.2 percent of its attempts, including a season-best 18-of-20 at the free throw line. On the defensive end, the Shockers forced 26 turnovers and recorded 13 steals, while holding Southern to 38.9 percent shooting and 6-of-19 from three-point range.
After opening the game with an 8-4 lead, Southern used a 12-4 spurt to close the period with a 16-12 advantage.
Wichita State would then close the half on a 16-2 run after trailing 27-22. Prince capped the second quarter with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give the Shockers a 38-29 lead at the half. For Prince, the long range jumper was the first career attempt from behind the line. In the second quarter, Wichita State shot 80 percent from the floor and made both of its three-point attempts.
Wichita State started the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run that lasted 4:51 to take the lead. The Shockers started the final period of play down two points, but the quick start catapulted them into a lead they wouldn't give up.
In the fourth quarter, Southern struggled mightily on the offensive end, making just three of its 11 field-goal attempts. The Jaguars didn't make a three-pointer in the final 10 minutes of the game.
