UConn's Walker, Wichita State's McCarty Claim Women's Basketball Weekly Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s first weekly women’s basketball honors, for the week ending Sunday, Dec. 1.
 
Player of the Week
Megan Walker * Jr. * F * UConn

Walker had a career outing for UConn at Dayton on Tuesday, posting a 23-point, 12-rebound double-double in the Huskies’ 75-37 win. She matched her career-high in boards and led all players in both scoring and rebounds, adding two assists and a block. Walker shot 9-of-19 (47.4 percent) from the field and 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) from beyond the arc as the Huskies rose to 6-0 on the season.
 
Freshman of the Week
DJ McCarty * Fr. * G * Wichita State

McCarty averaged 12.5 points, two rebounds, three assists and 1.5 steals in Wichita State’s 2-0 week, featuring wins over Houston Baptist and Oklahoma. She led a balanced Shocker attack with 12 points against HBU to go along with three rebounds and three assists. Against Oklahoma, she tallied 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and hit both of her 3-point attempts. The Shockers have won four-straight, with McCarty reaching double-figures in three straight outings.
 
 
Weekly Honor Roll
 
Lashonda Monk * Jr. * G * ECU
Posted back-to-back 21-point outings for ECU in a win over Longwood and loss at Wake Forest; went 15-of-37 (40.5 percent) from the field on the week, dishing out four assists and recording five steals
 
Julia Blackshell-Fair * Jr. * G * Houston
Recorded her first career double-double in Houston’s win over Cal Baptist, scoring a career-high 23 points with 10 rebounds; in three games, shot 16-of-27 (59.3 percent) from the field, averaging 13.3 points, 6.7 rebounds 5.0 assists and 2.3 steals per game in the Cougars’ 1-2 week
 
Jamirah Shutes * So. * G * Memphis
Tallied a career-high 27 points with five assists in Memphis’ 72-68 win over Kansas State, shooting 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from the field; followed with 14 points and four assists against LSU and was named to the Junkanoo Jam All-Star Team
 
Shannen Atkinson * Sr. * C * Temple
Averaged 10.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in Temple’s trip to the Cancun Challenge; scored 10 points with eight boards against North Carolina and followed an 11-point, 11-rebound performance against Creighton
 
Shyia Smith * So. * F * Wichita State
Registered her first career double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds against Houston Baptist for the highest single-game rebound total in the conference so far this season; added two points and six boards in the Shockers’ win over Oklahoma
