Highlights
- Houston and Tulane each picked up a second-straight walk-off win to highlight Saturday’s action, as eight American Athletic Conference baseball teams combined to play 10 games. The conference split Saturday’s matchups, 5-5, to improve to 12-7 against other conferences early in the 2019 season. Along with the Houston and Tulane, UCF picked up its second win of the year to clinch an opening-weekend series. Memphis and Wichita State each went 1-1 in their respective doubleheaders. After clinching Friday night wins, UConn and USF each took a Saturday loss to set up Sunday afternoon rubber matches. Both Cincinnati and Tulane played extra innings in their respective Saturday matchups. The league prepares for nine games Sunday.
Indiana 6, Memphis 1 | Memphis 6, Indiana 3
After switching Friday’s season opener to Saturday afternoon, Memphis split its open-day doubleheader against Indiana with a 6-1 Game 1 loss and 6-3 Game 2 win to start off its 2019 season.
Both teams went scoreless through the first four innings in the first game before Memphis starter Hunter Smith gave up four runs on three hits and an error in the fifth frame. Senior catcher Jason Santana went 2-for-3 with the only RBI of the game for the Tigers in the eighth inning. Making his debut with Memphis, Walker Brockhouse pitched 4.1 innings out of the bullpen, striking out six batters.
Game 2 had a similar start before Memphis struck first in the fourth inning and took a 6-0 lead through the first eight frames. Memphis starter Alex Hicks earned the win, tossing five shutout innings and fanning eight batters. Designated hitter Hunter Goodman hit three doubles and drove home four runs, while outfielder Colton Neel went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. The Tigers kept the Hoosiers off the board through eight innings before giving up three runs in the ninth. The rubber game on Sunday is set for a 2 p.m. ET start.
No. 4 Louisville 12, UConn 2
Following a one-run win over No. 4 Louisville to open its season Friday night, UConn took a 12-2 loss to the Cardinals, as the three-game series is locked at 1-1. Sunday’s rubber match is set for 12:30 p.m. ET in Lakeland, Fla. The Huskies were held to two hits, as shortstop Anthony Prato plated the only UConn run with a double in the fifth inning. Louisville did its damage through the first four frames, as UConn’s Angus Mayock, Jimmy Wang and Kenny Haus came out of the bullpen to combine for five shutout innings. Louisville belted three home runs and had five batters with a multi-hit game.
Florida Atlantic 8, Cincinnati 7 (11)
Outfielder Bobby Morgensen hit a walk-off double in the 11th inning for Florida Atlantic, as Cincinnati took an 8-7 loss in extra innings. Leading 6-2 in the sixth inning, the Bearcats gave up five runs. Cincinnati outfielder Joey Wiemer, who ended the night 3-for-5, tied the game at 7-7 with an RBI single in the eighth inning. Designated hitter Wyatt Stapp finished the night with two hits and two RBIs. Game 3 will be played at Noon ET Sunday.
Tulane 7, George Washington 6 (13)
Tulane picked up its second-straight walk-off win, outlasting George Washington, 7-6, in a 13-inning thriller to clinch the series. The Green Wave will look to sweep its opening weekend action Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. Third baseman Kody Hoese and designated hitter David Bedgood combined for six hits, five RBIs, four runs and each hit a homer. Five of the squad’s hits went for extra bases, including two doubles and three home runs. Tied at 7-7 in the 13th inning, Grant Mathews hit a sacrifice fly to shallow left field, allowing Bedgood to score the game-winning run. Krishna Raj scattered one hit through the final six innings and struck out six batters to earn the win.
Wichita State 8, Grand Canyon 7 | No. 5 Stanford 5 vs. Wichita State 4
Wichita State split its first pair of Saturday games of the 2019 season, defeating Grand Canyon 8-7, but falling to No. 5 Stanford 5-4.
Wichita state held off Grand Canyon to split the weekend series with the Lopes. The Shockers scored all eight of their runs through five of the first six innings before Grand Canyon battled back, scoring six runs through the final four frames. Six Shockers had a multi-hit game, led by designated hitter Mason O’Brien who went 3-for-4. Catcher Ross Cadena went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a double. Wichita State led 15-9 in hits. Preston Snavely pitched the first six innings, striking out six batters to earn the win, while reliever Alex Segal closed-out the game, tossing the final two innings to earn the save.
Returning to the field for a night cap, Wichita State led early on but gave up three runs in the third inning before surrendering a triple and sacrifice fly in the seventh, as Stanford held its lead until the end for a narrow one-run win. Third baseman Luke Ritter went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, while second baseman Alex Jackson went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a double. The Shockers face their third opponent of the weekend on Sunday in a neutral game against Pepperdine at Noon ET in Tempe, Ariz.
UCF 5, Siena 1
Tied at 1-1 in the seventh inning, UCF rallied for four runs en route to clinching a 5-1 win against Siena. After taking the series, the Knights will go for an opening-weekend sweep on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. ET. Five players recorded a multi-hit game with catcher Dallas Beaver leading the pack (3-5) with one RBI. Outfielder Dalton Wingo sent a homer over the right-field fence to fuel the Knights’ surge in the seventh inning. The pitching staff kept Siena off the board through the final four innings. Starter Trevor Holloway pitched 4.0 shutout innings, striking out six batters. Jack Sinclair earned the win after allowing only one hit and striking out three through 1.1 innings of work.
Samford 7, USF 3
USF outfielder Austin Bodrato became the third first-year Bull to homer in his first USF start, but Samford tited the weekend series at 1-1 with a 7-3 win. The rubber match is set for 1 p.m. ET in Tampa. Bodrato ended the game with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. USF went 7-2-1 in rubber matches last season.
Houston 5, Northwestern State 4
Houston enjoyed a second-consecutive walk-off win en route to clinching its opening-weekend series with a 5-4 victory over Northwestern State. The Cougars completed a come-from-behind win, scoring all five of their runs through the last four innings. Catcher Kyle Lovelace went 2-for-4, including the game-winning RBI single hit up the middle in the bottom of the ninth. Second baseman Brad Burckel, shortstop Kobe Hyland and third baseman Jared Triolo joined him in hitting .500 (2-for-4). Outfielder Tyler Bielamowicz added a two-run home run to the Cougars’ offense. Righthander Ryan Randel made the start, tossing five shutout innings, while scattering four hits and two earned runs. Houston has a chance to start off its 2019 season with a weekend sweep with the series finale slated for a 2 p.m. ET start.
