Highlights
 
- It was a 5-4 Sunday for American Athletic Conference baseball teams, as the league improved to 17-11 on the season against nonconference opponents. UCF, ECU and Tulane enjoyed opening-weekend sweeps, while UConn and USF finished strong with Sunday rubber-match wins to clinch their first series of the year. Two grand slams were hit under The American banner with UConn’s Christian Fedko and Tulane’s Hudson Haskin recording the big home runs. The Huskies highlighted Sunday’s action, taking down No. 4 Louisville, 8-3, for a season-opening statement win.
 
Florida Atlantic 5, Cincinnati 3
Cincinnati gave up four runs in the fifth inning, as the Bearcats took a 5-3 loss at Florida Atlantic to open their 2019 season 0-3. Outfielder Jeremy Johnson went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, while second baseman Jace mercer hit a two-run shot in the fifth inning. Starter Garrett Schoenle had a no decision after tossing four scoreless innings and scattering two hits.  
 
Pepperdine 13, Wichita State 8
Pepperdine used two five-run rallies to defeat Wichita State 13-8 to close out a four-game weekend for the Shockers. Wichita State used a late four-run spurt in the eighth inning, but it wasn’t enough, as the Shockers ended its opening-weekend slate 1-3. Outfielder Jacob Katzfey led Wichita State at the plate, going 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Wichita State got offensive contributions from the bottom of the order with shortstop Jordan Boyer and outfielder Jack Sigrist each going 2-for-3.
 
USF 4, Samford 1
Shortstop Nick Gonzalez and outfielder Kyle Phillips combined for five of USF’s nine hits, as the Bulls defeated Samford 4-1 in Sunday’s rubber match to clinch their first weekend series of the 2019 season. Ben Koff came in relief, tossing 4.2 innings, allowing just one hit with seven strikeouts. Graham Hoffman threw the final 2.1 innings, striking out six batters, while surrendering two hits to end the game. The Bulls' pitching staff had 36 strikeouts over the weekend. USF is now 8-2-1 in their last 11 rubber matches since the beginning of 2018.
 
UConn 8, No. 4 Louisville 3
UConn second baseman Christian Fedko hit a grand slam in the third inning before first baseman Chris Winkel added a two-run home run in the eighth frame, as the Huskies took down No. 4 Louisville, 8-3,  in Sunday’s rubber match to claim the weekend series. Fedko and Winkel each finished the day with two hits, as shortstop Anthony Prato and outfielder John Toppa joined them in having a multi-hit game. Righthander Jacob Wallace pitched the final 1.1 innings, retiring the side in order in the bottom of the ninth. The Huskies grabbed their first series win over a top-five ranked opponent since Jim Penders took the helm in 2004.
 
No. 11 ECU 4, Radford 3
Down by three runs in the fourth inning, ECU rallied for the final four runs of the game on the way to completing a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Radford and securing an opening-weekend sweep. Seven Pirates had at least one single, as catcher Jacob Washer went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Washer hit the game-winning RBI single in the seventh inning. Evan Voliva pitched 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out a career-high five of eight batters faced. He surrendered only one hit. ECU kept Radford off the board through the final six innings. The Pirates ended the weekend with a league-high .363 batting average.
 
UCF 7, Siena 1
UCF enjoyed a perfect start to the season, as the Knights defeated Siena 7-1 in Game 3 to sweep the series. Eight UCF batters had a hit with outfielder David Wingo and second baseman Matthew Mika collecting multi-hit games. UCF used five scoring innings to clinch the win. The Knights’ pitching staff had a solid performance with starter Jordan Spicer picking up the win. He fanned five batters through five shutout innings. Zack Helsel struck out four batters through 2.0 hitless innings, while Liam Silvagnoli entered in the ninth and struck out the side in order to end the game. The sweep was the 18th Opening Weekend sweep in program history. UCF finished the weekend, with a conference-best 1.00 earned run average.
 
Northwestern State 2, at Houston 1 (11)
Houston took a 2-1 loss to Northwestern State in 11 innings in Sunday’s series finale. With one down, the Cougars got runners on in the 11th inning, but the Demons forced a ground out and fly out to hang onto the win. The Cougars won two of the three games to clinch their opening-weekend series. Designated hitter Joe Davis finished 2-for-3 before being lifted for a pinch runner in the ninth after a leadoff single. He also had one walk. Third baseman Jared Triolo finished 2-for-5.
 
Indiana 6, Memphis 0
Memphis led 7-6 in hits, but the runs weren’t there, as the Tigers were blanked, 6-0, by Indiana in Game 3 of the series finale. Shortstop Alex Trela and second baseman Ben Brooks each went 2-for-4 to lead Memphis at the plate. Starter Chris Durham struck out seven through five innings pitched, but gave up three earned runs. The Tigers drop to 1-2 on the year.
 
Tulane 16, George Washington 6
Tulane’s offense was firing on all cylinders in a 16-6 win over George Washington to sweep its opening-weekend series. The Green wave used a big sixth-inning eight-run surge, highlighted by freshman outfielder Hudson Haskin’s grand slam to pull away. Ten Green Wave batters recorded a hit and seven had at least one RBI, as outfielder Grant Mathews led the way, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Six of Tulane’s 13 hits went for extra bases.
