UConn defeated Charleston 7-4, while Houston edged No. 24 Arizona 2-1 on a 2-4 Friday for American Athletic Conference baseball teams. Three games were postponed due to inclement weather, as the league gears up for a busy 11-game Saturday slate. The Cougars’ win against the Wildcats marked the fourth victory over a ranked opponent for an American team in the early season.
Houston Baptist 5, Cincinnati 4
Cincinnati held the lead for the majority of the game until Houston Baptist put up a four-run eighth inning to pull in front. The Bearcats scored two in the final frame, but were unable to muster another run to extend the contest, as the Huskies took the opening-series game 5-4. The second game of the series is slated for 2 p.m. ET Saturday. Outfielder Jeremy Johnson continued to do well at the plate with a 3-for-4 day with a walk. Outfielder Joey Wiemer and designated hitter Wyatt Stapp both had two hits with Wiemer hitting a double and Stapp picking up an RBI and scoring a run.
UConn 7, Charleston 4
UConn clinched the series opener against Charleston, 7-4, on the road. The Huskies got three hits from shortstop Anthony Prato and first baseman Chris Winkel, while Jacob Wallace earned his third save of the young season. No. 10 Ole Miss 6, Tulane 4
After battling back to take a 4-2 lead over No. 10 Ole Miss, a pair of late two-run innings by the visitors would be the difference as Tulane suffered its first defeat of the year 6-4 Friday night. Tulane outhit the Rebels 12-6 on the night, getting base knocks from eight different players in the contest. First baseman Trevor Jensen and shortstop Sal Gozzo each had doubles among their two hits, while designated hitter Grant Mathews went 2-for-3 and outfielder Ty Johnson went 2-for-5. Starter Kaleb Roper struck out eight through 6.2 innings but allowed five runs and took the loss. The Green Wave hosts the Rebels in game two of the series Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
Stephen F. Austin 4, Wichita State 3 (11)
Wichita State led by two in the seventh inning, but Stephen F. Austin tacked on a pair of runs to bring it to extra innings before scoring the tie-breaking run in the 11th frame, as the Shockers fell in a 3-2 decision. Sophomore Paxton Wallace went 3-for-5 at the plate and hit his first home run of the season, while senior Luke Ritter added a 3-for-4 performance in the batter's box, leading Wichita State offensively. The Shockers will continue their action at the UT Arlington Classic with two games Saturday. Game one against UT Arlington is scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET first pitch, with game two versus Stephen F. Austin set for 4:30 p.m. ET.
No. 18 Auburn 4, UCF 1
UCF dropped the opening game of its weekend series against No. 18 Auburn Friday night, 4-1. Neither side was able to do much offensively, as the pitching staff held each club to just five hits apiece. The Knights were unable to overcome three runs scored by the Tigers through the first four innings. Griffin Bernardo put the Knights on the board on a single in the sixth inning. Second baseman Matthew Mika went 2-for-3 to earn his second multi-hit performance of the season. The second game of the series is set for 6 p.m. ET Saturday.
Houston 2, No. 24 Arizona 1
Houston held Arizona to two hits as designated hitter Joe Davis delivered his third home run of the season in the eighth inning to give the Cougars a 2-1 win over the Wildcats. Starter Tyler Bielamowicz struck out five through 6.0 innings while scattering two hits and a run. Fred Villarreal shut the door through the final three innings, allowing no hits or runs to earn his first win of the season. He gave up only one walk, retiring eight of nine batters faced. Houston hosts Arizona in game two Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
