Highlights
The American improved to 7-5 against ranked opponents this season after UCF, Houston and Tulane each clinched wins over top-25 teams in a 6-4 Saturday for the league’s baseball teams. ECU swept Monmouth in a doubleheader, while Wichita State bounced back for an 18-2 win over Stephen F. Austin after falling in game one of the series Friday. Conference teams will combine for 11 games on Sunday.
UT Arlington 5, Wichita State 2 | Wichita State 18, Stephen F. Austin 2
Wichita State split two games in the UT Arlington Classic Saturday, dropping game one to the host UT Arlington Mavericks, 5-2, before rolling to an 18-2 victory in the nightcap against Stephen F. Austin. The Shockers are slated to play UT Arlington Sunday, Feb. 24, at Noon ET to wrap up play in the classic.
Wichita State tallied a season-best 17 hits and plated at least one run in all but two innings in the 18-2 rout of Stephen F. Austin in game two. Four Wichita State players compiled multiple hits in the game, led by seniors Mason O'Brien and Luke Ritter. O'Brien went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs, a homer and double, while Ritter compiled three hits with three runs scored and three RBIs.
The Shockers couldn’t overcome a three-run deficit in the third inning in game one against UT Arlington. Jordon Boyer went 2-for-4 with a run, and Ritter added a double, one run and an RBI.
Houston 9, No. 24 Arizona 7
Houston held off No. 24 Arizona to clinch it second season series of the early season with a 9-7 win. The Cougars scored six runs through the first three frames and refused to look back from there. The Wildcats scored four runs in the eighth and ninth innings to get within two, but the Cougars’ hung on for the win. Third baseman Jared Triolo and outfielder Tyler Bielamowicz combined for four hits and five RBIs to. Four Houston batters recorded multi-hit games. Righthander Ryan Randel got the start and fanned seven batters through the first six innings to earn the win. Houston and Arizona play the final game of the series Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
No. 5 North Carolina 3, USF 2 (10)
USF held a one-run lead heading into the ninth inning, but No. 5 North Carolina walked off with a 3-2 win after hitting two solo home runs in the first game of the series. Hits were 6-5 in favor of USF, as third baseman Dylan Buck had a 2-for-4 night. USF starter Collin Sullivan struck out seven through 6.2 innings, scattering one run on two hits. The series continues Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. ET.
UCF 6, No. 18 Auburn 1
UCF scored six runs through the first five innings to tie its three-game series with No. 18 Auburn in a 6-1 win. Outfielder Ray Alejo went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while designated hitter Chandler Robertson and outfielder Dalton Wingo joined him in adding multi-hit performances to the box score. Starter Trevor Holloway earned his first win of the year after striking out five through 5.0 shutout innings. The Knights’ bullpen held the Tigers to two hits through the final four innings. Sunday’s rubber game is slated for a 1 p.m. ET start.
Charleston 7, UConn 2
UConn dropped the second game of the series against Charleston, 7-2. The Huskies were off to an early lead with a two-run home run from senior John Toppa in the top of the first. But UConn gave up the final seven runs and took their second loss of the young season. Outfielder Michael Woodworth had a 3-for-5 day, while Toppa and catcher Paul Gozzo each had two hits. UConn will face Charleston in a Sunday rubber match with first pitch at Noon ET.
No. 11 ECU 3, Monmouth 1 | No. 11 ECU 10, Monmouth 0
Alec Burleson (10) and Jake Agnos (11) each registered double-digit strikeouts Saturday helping No. 11 ECU to a doubleheader sweep (3-1, 10-0) over Monmouth. Burleson also had a solid day at the plate, finishing with six hits, three doubles and three RBIs. Agnos tossed seven scoreless frames in game one where he allowed four hits, walked one and punched out 11 batters tying his career-high. Burleson picked up the win in game two, allowing a run on five hits with three walks and striking out a career-high 10 batters. The lefty also picked off four runners at first base. The Pirates pounded out double-digit hits in both games with Burleson (three), Ryder Giles (two) and Jake Washer (two) recording multi-hit games in the first contest. Burleson, Seth Caddell, Giles and Lane Hoover each had multiple hits in game two. The Pirates will go for their second series sweep of the season Sunday.
Houston Baptist 2, Cincinnati 1
Cincinnati lost a pitchers' duel Saturday afternoon as Houston Baptist was able to walk off on a base hit in the bottom of the ninth, winning 2-1. The game consisted of only eight hits, as the Bearcats’ starter Nathan Kroger gave up one run and three hits in 6.0 innings while striking out four. Outfielder Joey Wiemer had the best day at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance. The series finale takes place at 2 p.m. ET Sunday.
Tulane 13, No. 10 Ole Miss 12
Tulane earned its third walk-off win of the season to even its series against No. 10 Ole Miss with a 13-12 victory. Infielder David Bedgood entered the game to pinch hit in the ninth, delivering a two-run home run to seal the win. The finale of the series is set for a 2 p.m. ET first pitch Sunday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Tulane held an 11-9 lead in the bottom of the eighth before the Rebels plated three on a homer in the ninth. For the second consecutive day Tulane produced double figure hits and out-hit the Rebels 17-10. Nine different batters produced hits for the Green Wave, while Mathews, Owen, Hudson Haskin, Trevor Jensen, Jonathon Artigues and Acy Owen each produced multiple hits. Grant Mathews finished a triple short of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Kobi Owen went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored.
