Tulane and Wichita State collect midweek wins

Hunter Gibson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 13th inning, as Wichita State walked off against Kansas on Wednesday night. The Shockers took a two-run lead into the seventh inning, thanks to a two-run homer from Luke Ritter. Kansas then tied the game at 2-2, as it remained a stalemate over the next six frames. Wichita State’s pitching staff combined for 12 shutout innings, registering 20 strikeouts, while stranding 15 Kansas base runners. Wichita State reliever Aaron Haase struck out four through the final three innings to earn the win. Four Shockers enjoyed a multi-hit game, as Ross Cadena went 3-for-5 with a double. Ritter extended his on-base streak to 32 games, dating back to last season. Wichita State opens its conference slate at home with a three-game series against Memphis.
 
Tulane 7, Louisiana-Lafayette 3
Seven Tulane batters had a hit, as the Green Wave rallied early and held its lead in a 7-3 win against Louisiana-Lafayette Wednesday night. Tulane strung together six runs through the first four innings. Grant Mathews, Hudson Haskin and Frankie Niemann each had two hits. Haskin had four RBIs, including a two-run home run in the third inning and two runs scored, while Niemann registered two doubles. It marked the 14th time Tulane tallied double-digit hits (10) this season. Kody Hoese hit his conference-leading 10th home run of the season in the opening inning. Starter Krishna Raj picked up his second win of the season after fanning four batters through the first 5.1 innings. Tulane will take on Houston Baptist in a three-game series this weekend.
 
Virginia 6, UConn 3
UConn led 3-1 entering the seventh inning but could not close out the game, falling at Virginia, 6-3. The Huskies open American Athletic Conference play with a three-game series at Houston beginning on Friday. Chris Winkel hit a three-run home run in the second inning to give UConn the lead through six innings.  Virginia scored two runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to take control of the game. Colby Dunlop recorded a season-high 5.1 innings for the Huskies, allowing just a pair of hits and striking out four. The Huskies had just four hits in the game. Anthony Prato walked to extend his reach base streak to 24 games.
