Jared Triolo’s RBI single in the fifth inning ended up being the difference, as Houston head coach Todd Whitting picked up his 300th-career win in a 2-1 victory over Sam Houston State in the Don Sanders Cup at Schroeder Park Tuesday night. Whitting is in his ninth year at the helm of the Cougars. During his career, he has been a part of programs that won 21 conference regular-season and tournament championships, competed in 17 NCAA Regionals, six NCAA Super Regionals and one NCAA College World Series.
 
Triolo ended the night with two hits to guide Houston’s offense. Starter Clay Aguilar worked 7.0 innings, fanning five batters, while scattering one run on three hits and a pair of walks. Fred Villarreal tossed the final two frames, giving up only one hit on the way to earning his fourth save of the season. The Cougars travel to Nacogdoches, Texas, to take on Stephen F. Austin Wednesday night.
 
UConn 12, Hartford 4
After playing its first 21 games on the road, UConn opened its home slate with a 12-4 win over Hartford Tuesday. The Huskies scored a season-high seven runs in the second inning, and tallied 10 hits in the win. UConn improves to 11-0 when outhitting its opponent. Michael Woodworth led the offensive surge with four RBIs and a 2-for-4 showing at the plate. Anthony Prato and Paul Gozzo each registered two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Five of the Huskies’ 10 hits were doubles. UConn’s pitching staff combined for six shutout frames. UConn has won 10 of its last 13 contests and will remain at home to take on Boston College Wednesday.
 
Wichita State 12, Omaha 2
Wichita State hit three home runs and scored 12 times in a 12-2 win over Omaha Tuesday night. Four players recorded multiple hits. Jordan Boyer led the Shockers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and two RBIs. Luke Ritter has reached safely in 36-consecutive games dating back to last season. He added a triple, a home run and drove in a game-high three runs. Wichita State led 11-6 in hits, as the pitching staff combined for eight shutout innings. The Shockers racked up six runs on three hits in the opening frame and refused to look back from there. Wichita State returns to Eck Stadium Wednesday night to host Kansas State.
 
No. 22 Ole Miss 9, Memphis 6
Memphis’ rally came up short at AutoZone Park, as the Tigers dropped a 9-6 decision to No. 22 Ole Miss Tuesday night. Colton Neel hit a two-run RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth inning to close the deficit to one run (7-6), but the Rebels tacked on another two insurance runs in the top of the ninth and hung onto their lead. The Tigers pounded out a season-high 15 hits in the loss with nine different players recording at least one base knock and four batters registering multi-hit performances. The Tigers left 11 base runners stranded. Hunter Goodman recorded four hits, while Ben Brooks tallied three RBIs with a double to lead the Tigers’ offense. Memphis returns to FedExPark to host Houston over the weekend.
 
Louisiana 7. Tulane 6
Tulane had a six-run surge in the fifth inning, but Louisiana scored the final three runs of the game en route to edging the Green Wave, 7-6 Tuesday night. Tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Colton Frank hit a solo home run for Louisiana, as the Ragin’ Cajuns walked off with the win.
 
Tulane defeated Louisiana 7-3 last Wednesday, as the Ragin’ Cajuns evened the season series at 1-1. Five Green Wave batters had multiple hits, while eight registered at least one base knock. Tulane led 15-8 in hits and left 13 base runners stranded. Trevor Jensen and Frankie Niemann each had three hits, while Grant Mathews registered a three-run homer to fuel Tulane’s surge in the sixth. Niemann ended the night with two doubles. Tulane will travel to Cincinnati to open conference play in a three-game series over the weekend.
