Baseball: Memphis defeats Western Kentucky 9-6 in series opener

Behind its highest run total of the season, Memphis grabbed an early lead and didn't look back as the Tigers beat Western Kentucky 9-6 on Thursday afternoon at Nick Denes Field. Four Tiger players collected multi-hit efforts. Hunter Goodman (3-for-5), Jason Santana (2-for-5),  Alec Trela (2-for-4) and Cale Hennemann (2-for-4) each enjoyed multiple hits on the day. Goodman and Santana each added an RBI, while Hennemann tallied a game-high three runs batted in. Memphis used five runs in the second inning to establish the advantage.
 
On the mound, junior Danny Denz picked up the win in his second start of the year. Colton Neel, who scored two runs on offense, notched his second save of the season. Game 2 of the series is slated for 4 p.m. ET Friday with the final game of the weekend anticipated for Sunday.
