In his first weekend start of the season, Cincinnati’s David Orndorff went 8.0 innings with one run, five hits and five strikeouts. His two walks were intentional, and he threw only 88 pitches. Korren Thompson pitched the final inning to earn his fifth save this year. Griffin Merritt and Jeremy Johnson both finished 2-for-3 at the plate, while Joey Wiemer’s three-run home run in the fifth inning was the difference-maker. Jared Triolo had three hits and an RBI to lead Houston at the plate. Houston made it a one-run game in the ninth, using four hits, as Derrick Cherry drove home the run. Game 2 of the three-game set is slated for Friday night.

USF rallied for a pair of four-run surges to snap a four-game slide with a 9-1 series-opening win over The Citadel. USF starter Baron Stuart threw a career-long 8.0 innings, surrendering just one run on five hits, issuing no walks. It was also a season long for any USF pitcher. The Bulls and The Citadel will continue the series with a doubleheader beginning Saturday at 11 a.m. ET due to expected inclement weather.
