No. 22 UConn 5, Cincinnati 1
No. 22 UConn evened its series against Cincinnati with a 5-1 win at Dunkin' Donuts Park in Hartford. Trailing 1-0 in the second, David Langer hit his first career home run—a two-run shot—to give UConn its first lead of the day, 2-1. John Toppa provided insurance for the Huskies with his third home run of the season, a solo shot in the seventh inning. Jake Wallace closed out the victory and has thrown 14.1-consecutive scoreless innings in his last nine appearances. Anthony Nucerino recorded his third-straight multi-hit effort. Jace Mercer had two hits to lead the Bearcats at the dish. Sunday’s rubber game is set for a 12:05 p.m. ET first pitch at Dunkin' Donuts Park.
Memphis 14, Southern 12 (12) | Memphis 10, Southern 1 (8)
In its third doubleheader sweep of the year, Memphis secured its fifth series win of the season after taking a twin bill against Southern Saturday at FedExPark. The Tigers found a walk-off, extra-inning win in the day's first game, as the Tigers outlasted Southern in a 14-12 slugfest. The 14 runs marked a season-high for Memphis. In Game 2, the Tigers used a balanced attacked of pitching and offense to claim an eight-inning 10-1 win.
Hunter Goodman hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the 12th inning in Game 1. The rookie finished the contest 2-for-6 with two homers and five RBIs. Cale Hennemann drove in two runs and finished the game with three hits. All nine Memphis starters had at least one hit and one RBI.
In game two, Memphis used a pair of five-run innings in the fourth and eighth to surge. The game was halted with the Tigers batting in the bottom of the eighth inning due to inclement weather. Payton Marshall went 3-for-4 at the plate. Keith Stepter hit a three-run homer. Goodman and Alec Trela added to the offensive swell with a pair of hits. Chris Durham threw 6.2 innings, surrendering just one run and tying a career-high nine strikeouts.
Tulane 12, Wichita State 6 | Tulane 8, Wichita State 4
After dropping the first game of the series, Tulane swept Wichita State in a doubleheader to clinch its second-straight American set. The Green Wave defeated the Shockers 12-6 in the first game and 8-4 in the series finale.
Tulane used an eight-run second inning to power its way to victory in Game 1. The Green Wave pounded out 13 hits, as four batters enjoyed a multi-hit outing. Five players drove in multiple runs. Trevor Jensen went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a pair of doubles. Kody Hoese and Kobi Owen each hit a homer. It marked Hoese’s conference-leading 16th home run of the season. Raj Krishna earned his third win of the year after surrendering one run on four hits and issuing no walks through 4.2 innings. Luke Ritter went 2-for-3 to lead Wichita State.
Tulane scored six runs through the first three innings to secure the win in Game 2. Hudson Haskin went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, while Hoese continued an outstanding day at the plate, hitting a pair of doubles and driving in two runs. Starter Chase Solesky struck out five through 6.0 innings of work to earn the win. Brendan Cellucci closed the door, striking out three through the final 1.2 innings to earn his second save of the year. Three Shockers had a multi-hit showing, including Ritter who registered two more hits on the day.
UCF 5, USF 0 (Suspended in 7th Inning)
UCF took a 5-0 lead before Game 2 of the War on I-4 series against USF was suspended in the seventh inning, due to inclement weather. The two ballclubs, in conjunction with the American Athletic Conference, agreed to resume play with one out and no runners on in the top of the seventh inning Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ET. Game 3 will begin 45 minutes at the conclusion of the second game. UCF starter Chris Williams tossed 6.1 innings before the lightning struck, scattering four hits and punching out six batters.
No. 11 ECU 15, Houston 3 No. 11 ECU 3, Houston
No. 11 ECU completed a doubleheader sweep of Houston to clinch its third-straight series win in American Athletic Conference action Saturday at Schroeder Field. It marked the first time the Pirates defeated the Cougars in a series taking place in Houston since 2011.
ECU erupted for 15 runs on 14 hits to take the first game of the doubleheader, 15-3. Tyler Smith picked up the win allowing two runs on five hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts in five innings of work. ECU jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first two innings and crossed home plate 11 more times through the final four frames. Spencer Brickhouse went 3-for-4 with six RBIs including two homers. He hit his first-career grand slam. Turner Brown went 4-for-6 with an RBI, as Jake Washer had two hits, including a home run. Johnathon Thomas went 2-for-2 to lead the Cougars.
Trailing 1-0 in the second game of the day, ECU scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning taking a 2-1 lead. Ryder Giles drove in the game-winning run with a single to left scoring Brady Lloyd from second for a one run advantage. Brickhouse and Washer also drove in runs. Starter Jake Kuchmaner surrendered one run (earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out seven in 5.1 innings. Alec Burleson notched his third save of the year with 2.1 scoreless frames where he gave up a hit, walked one and punched out four. Clay Aguilar suffered the loss giving up a pair of runs (both earned) on five hits while striking out a career-high nine batters in 6.2 innings. Joe Davis, Rey Fuentes III and Derrick Cherry each had two hits to pace Houston at the plate.
