No. 8 ECU 7, Wichita State 3
Lane Hoover recorded a pair of hits and scored twice, while Tyler Smith (7-0) allowed two runs over five frames helping No. 8 ECU to a 7-3 series win over Wichita State Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium. Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, the Pirates finally got on the board in the third inning pushing across four runs on three hits taking a 4-1 advantage. The Pirates plated three runs in the seventh extending their lead to 7-2. Hoover, who extended his hitting streak to 11 games, tallied his 11th multi-hit game of the season to lead the Pirates’ offense. The Shockers tallied 13 hits in the game getting multiple base knocks from Jacob Katzfey, Luke Ritter and Paxton Wallace.
Houston 5, Tulane 2
Houston defeated Tulane 5-2 at Schroeder Park to clinch a key American series. Derrick Cherry turned in his second-straight three-hit effort, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Senior righthanders Ryan Randel and Nolan Bond combined to go the distance. Randel (4-2) picked up his fourth win of the season. He held the Green Wave scoreless for the first seven innings before being levied for two unearned runs in the eighth. Randel surrendered just three runs while walking three and striking out five over a career-long seven and one-third innings. Grant Mathews went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the eighth inning to lead the Green Wave.
Cincinnati 4, Memphis 2
Cincinnati closed out American Athletic Conference play with a series victory as it beat Memphis 4-2 on Sunday. The Bearcats finish 13-11 in American play and currently sit in third place. Clayton Colvin hurled a great game in the start, going 6.0 innings with two runs, four hits and no walks. He tied his career-high with seven strikeouts. Korren Thompson earned his ninth save of the season and second of the weekend with a scoreless ninth. Eric Santiago and Jace Mercer both were 2-for-4 in the contest. Memphis was led by Cale Hennemann who went 2-for-4 at the dish. Chris Durham struck out seven through 6.2 innings of work, but the Tigers’ starter was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits.
