Baseball: Four teams earn a win Saturday

UConn and Wichita State split a Saturday twin bill, as the Huskies took the first game 2-1 and the Shockers bounced back 12-5 in Game 2. UConn’s one-run win to start the day gave the Huskies their fourth American series victory of the season. Wichita State snapped a seven-game slide with its win in the second game.
 
The Fedko brothers got it done for the Huskies in the opening game, as both plated a run in back-to back at-bats in the first inning. Christian Fedko doubled down the line to score Mike Woodworth before Kyler Fedko brought home his older brother with a sacrifice fly to right field during the next at-bat. Wichita State’s Ross Cadena earned the only other run of the game in the fifth inning with a solo homer.
 
UConn starter Jeff Kersten picked up his fifth win of the year, scattering one run on five hits and two walks, while fanning five. Caleb Wurster pitched 2.0 shutout innings in relief with three strikeouts. Jacob Wallace earned his conference-leading 11th save of the season with 1.1 clean innings in relief, ending the game with the second K of his outing.
 
Wichita State tallied six runs in the first four innings of Game 2 and refused to look back. Paxton Wallace hit a grand slam in the top of the third, while Mason O’Brien homered twice. They both finished the game with two hits and combined for six runs scored. Eight Shockers ran across home plate in the victory. On the mound, Connery Peters earned his first win of the season after giving up one run on six hits in 7.0 innings of work.
 
The Huskies led 12-8 in hits. C. Fedko (two RBIs) and Thad Phillips (two doubles) both had three hits to pace UConn at the dish. Angus Mayock tossed three shutout innings in relief for the Huskies, striking out three batters.  
 
UCF 4, Tulane 2
Brandon Hernandez’s two-run homer in the fourth inning lifted UCF to a 4-2 win at Tulane, as the Knights evened the series with the Green Wave. Sunday’s rubber match is set for a 2 p.m. ET first pitch.
 
UCF got a solid start from starter Chris Williams who pitched 7.0 innings with five punch outs. He scattered two runs on seven hits and one walk against The American’s top offense. Kyle Kemp closed the door for the Knights, pithing the final 2.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Dallas Beaver and Matthew Mika also drove in runs for UCF, as Beaver and Tyler Osik each enjoyed multi-hit performances. Hits were tied at 8-8, as Tulane’s Kody Hoese went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the seventh inning. Grant Mathews followed with a solo home run in the eighth inning. Tulane starter Keagan Gillies struck out six in 6.0 innings pitched but gave up four runs on seven hits and took the loss.
 
Houston 2, UNLV 0
Derrick Cherry and Rey Fuentes III each drove in a run, as Houston shutout UNLV 2-0 in the first game of a two-game series Saturday night. Houston starter Lael Lockhart Jr. struck out five through 7.2 innings of work to earn his fourth win of the season. Devon Roedahl slammed the door, tossing the final 1.1 innings, allowing no hits and one walk while fanning three batters to earn his fourth save this year. The two Houston pitchers combined to strand eight UNLV base runners. Tyler Bielamowicz had two hits to lead the Cougars’ offense. Both teams were limited to five hits. Houston looks to sweep the series Sunday with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. ET.
