ECU Advances to Second Super Regional in Four Years

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –   ECU (47-16), the NCAA Baseball Championship’s No. 10 national seed, advanced to its fifth NCAA Super Regional and second in four seasons (2001, 2004, 2009, 2016) after defeating Campbell twice in the Greenville Regional final on Monday. The Pirates, which had to win three elimination games, started off the day with a 10-3 win over the Fighting Camels before surging to victory in a winner-takes all final with a 12-3 rout of Campbell in the second game of the day. The Pirates are one of 16 NCAA teams to advance to a Super Regional.
 
ECU heads to Louisville for a best-of-three Super Regional series from June 7-10. The Pirates have a chance to punch a ticket to Omaha and advance to the program’s first-ever College World Series (CWS). The CWS begins Saturday, June 15 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.
 
UConn (39-25), which advanced to its second NCAA regional final in as many years, dropped a 3-1 decision to Oklahoma State in the Oklahoma City Regional to conclude another historic season. The Huskies made their sixth NCAA tournament appearance since 2010.
 
The American has had three Super Regional teams over the past six seasons. Houston and Louisville both advanced to the Super Regional round in the 2014 NCAA Championship, while ECU reached the Super Regionals in 2016. The American has one CWS appearances to its credit. Louisville advanced to Omaha in 2014, when the Cardinals competed in the conference.

Highlights
ECU posted a dominating 10-3 win over Campbell to survive and force a winner-takes all final against the Fighting Camels at 7 p.m. ET. The Pirates’ defense consistently escaped jams, leaving 11 Campbell base runners stranded in the first game of the day. On the flip side, ECU’s offense tallied 10 runs on 11 hits with seven Pirates registering at least one base knock. ECU head coach Cliff Godwin earned his 200th career victory with the win.
 
ECU struck first in the opening inning with Jake Washer plating in his eighth run of the regional with a sacrifice fly to left field. The Fighting Camels were quick to respond, as Spencer Packard delivered a two-run RBI double to left field in the bottom half of the frame. After ECU starter Alec Burleson retired the side in order in the second, the Pirates tacked on three more runs over the next two innings to regain the lead. Ryder Giles and Bryant Packard drove in runs in the second inning before Spencer Brickhouse crossed home plate on a wild pitch in the third to give the Pirates a 4-2 cushion.
 
Burleson drove in his first of two RBIs in the fourth inning before the Pirates swung the door open with four runs in the fifth to move out to a 9-2 lead. Packard collected his third hit and RBI of the game with a two-run single before Burleson followed with an RBI double down the left field line to bring in another pair of runs. Campbell got one back in the sixth, but ECU’s Sam Lanier was able to get out of a jam with runners on the corners. Washer capped the Pirates’ scoring with his fourth home run of the regional to make it a 10-3 ballgame.
 
Alec Burleson (6-1) gave the Pirates a solid start, fanning five through 5.0 innings of work. At the plate, he finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Packard led ECU out of the leadoff spot going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored.  Washer went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

Highlights
ECU picked up where it left off in its second game of the day, scoring a run in all but two innings on the way to clinching its fifth Super Regional bid. The Pirates pounded out another 12 hits in their 12-3 win over Campbell with Bryant Packard (2-for-4), Turner Brown (3-for-5) and Spencer Brickhouse (3-for-4) combining for eight hits, five runs and six RBIs. The Pirates outscored the Fighting Camels 22-6 on the day.
 
ECU surged early, scoring two runs in both the first and second innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Brickhouse recorded two RBIs during that span, including a solo blast to right field in the second inning. The Pirates tacked on a run in the third, fourth and seventh innings before surging for five more in the eighth.
 
Brickhouse went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two doubles. Brown went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Jake Kuchmaner (7-2) earned the pitching win in relief, after scattering one hit in 3.1 shutout innings. He retired nine-straight batters from the sixth to ninth innings, lowering his season ERA to 2.99. Spencer Packard went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two doubles to lead the Fighting Camels at the plate.
 
The last time the Pirates advanced to a Super Regional was in 2016 when ECU took on Texas Tech in the Lubbock Regional. ECU won the series opener before falling in the final two games.

Highlights
Carson McCusker drove in two runs with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning for Oklahoma State, as UConn’s postseason run came to an end with a 3-1 loss to the Cowboys in the Oklahoma City Regional final. UConn ended its season with 39 wins—the third most victories in program history. The Huskies made their second-consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and sixth since 2010.
 
The game remained scoreless through the first four innings, as both teams combined for only four hits, demonstrating strong defensive efforts during that span. Christian Fedko and Pat Winkel both stroked well-hit balls to left field in the first and fourth innings, respectively, as Oklahoma State outfielder Noah Sifrit made two impressive grabs to prevent any early damage.
 
UConn struck first in the fifth inning with Anthony Prato driving in the Huskies’ only run of the game. The Cowboys responded right away, as Alix Garcia delivered a solo home run in the home half of the frame to tie it a 1-1. McCusker then hit the game-winning RBI double to give Oklahoma State its first and final lead of the contest.
 
The Huskies threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but the Cowboys induced a double play to get out of the jam. After striking out seven-straight batters last night, UConn closer Jacob Wallace took the mound in the bottom of the sixth with one out and runner in scoring positon. He went on to retire eight-straight batters, including striking out the side in order in the eighth, but the Huskies’ offense were held without a hit through the final three innings.
 
UConn, which recorded 58 hits through its first three NCAA Regional games, was held to five hits by the Cowboys’ pitching staff. Joe Lienhard (4-1) and Peyton Battenfield saw time on the mound for Oklahoma State. Lienhard picked up the win after scattering one run on five hits through the first six innings. Battenfield pitched the final three innings, registering five strikeouts and earned his fifth save of the year.
