Memphis equaled a program best by opening 2019 with a 10-0 start after sweeping North Alabama on Friday to open the Beale Street Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. The Tigers hit at a near .500 clip in the opening set (.481) as a team and raced to the sweep by way of 25-14, 25-22, 31-28 set wins. Memphis established a team record with win number 11 later in the evening by a 3-1 result against Toledo.
 
Hannah Flowers and Meredith Wallace both tied for the team lead with 13 kills in the win over North Alabama, and Kaitlyn Gehler added a team-high 18 digs for Memphis. Sabrina Bianco contributed 38 assists in the opening win for the Tigers.
 
Tulsa 3, Samford 1 (27-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-16)/No. RV Western Kentucky 3, Tulsa 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-13)
 
Tulsa was victorious in its initial game of the WKU Volleyball Invitational in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Golden Hurricane handled Samford 27-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-16 in the four-set triumph. Host Western Kentucky swept Tulsa in the nightcap by a 25-16, 25-15, 25-13 score.
 
Dilara Gedikoglu powered the Tulsa offense with 16 kills in the win over Samford, while Maggie Hembree added 11 kills and a .733 attack percentage. Taylor Horsfall chipped in 22 digs for the Golden Hurricane, and Callie Cook notched 10 kills and five block assists.
 
ECU 3, Gardner-Webb 1 (25-8, 25-14, 24-26, 25-10)
 
East Carolina won its sixth straight match, dropping Gardner-Webb in four sets in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. The Pirates vaulted past Gardner-Webb by a 25-8, 25-14, 24-26, 25-10 final.
 
Bri Wood registered a team-high 13 digs for ECU, adding five kills and three services aces in the win. Natalie Tyson 10 kills to the Pirates cause, while Sydney Kleinman recorded nine kills and four digs.
 
UConn 3, Dartmouth 1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-10, 25-17)
 
UConn won its second straight match at the Dog Pound Challenge in Storrs, Connecticut. The Huskies flew past Dartmouth in four sets, downing the Big Green 25-22, 17-25, 25-10, 25-17.
 
Caylee Parker notched a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs to pace UConn, while Genna Florig had 11 kills, seven total blocks and four digs. Jasmine Davis added eight kills and nine digs in the winning cause for the Huskies.
 
Wyoming 3, Wichita State 1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20)
 
Despite a convincing first-set win against Wyoming, Wichita State was unable to build on the momentum in its final match of the Creighton Classic in Omaha, Nebraska. The Shockers ultimately fell to Wyoming in four sets by a 17-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20 final score.
 
Megan Taflinger’s 13 kills led the way for Wichita State in defeat, and Kara Brown notched a team-high 23 digs. Brylee Kelly added 10 kills and seven block assists for the Shockers.
 
Florida Gulf Coast 3, No. RV UCF 1 (24-26, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22)
 
UCF stumbled in its first game of the Sunshine State Classic in Orlando, Florida, falling to Florida Gulf Coast 24-26, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22.
 
McKenna Melville starred for UCF with 21 kills and 17 digs in defeat, and Kristina Fisher added a double-double of 17 kills and 17 digs for the Knights. Amber Olson finished the match with 24 assists and 13 digs for UCF.
 
Texas Tech 3, Houston 1 (25-15, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19)
 
Houston emerged on the wrong side of a 25-15, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19 decision at host Texas Tech on the opening night of the Red Raider Classic in Lubbock, Texas.
 
Claire Karsten posted 13 kills and six digs for Houston, and Katie Karbo led the way for the Cougars with 20 digs. Megan Duncan registered eight kills in the setback for Houston.
 
No. RV Indiana 3, USF 2 (16-25, 25-18, 17-25, 25-16, 15-8)
 
USF dropped a heartbreaking five-set decision to No. RV Indiana in its first match of the USF Invitational in Tampa, Florida. The Bulls fell by a final tally of 16-25, 25-18, 17-25, 25-16, 15-8.
 
Jac St. Cin propelled the Bulls offense with a match-high 20 kills, and Jac’cara Walker registered a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Lauren LaBeck recorded 38 assists and 16 digs for USF in the setback.
 
Princeton 3, Temple 0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-23)
 
Temple was swept in a hard-fought decision in its second match of the Big 5 Challenge at Villanova, falling to Princeton by way of a 25-15, 25-14, 25-23 final.
 
Peyton Boyd’s 10 kills and three block assists paced Temple, as did the 13 digs of Averi Salvador. Tyler Lindgren posted 21 assists for the Owls.
