PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s soccer honors for the week ending Sunday, Sept. 22.
Offensive Player of the Week
Garrett McLaughlin * Sr. * F * SMU
McLaughlin recorded a goal in both of SMU’s victories last week, with both scores coming at crucial moments. The senior’s tally in the 22nd minute at No. 2 Duke on Sept. 16 proved to be the game-winner as SMU shut out the Blue Devils 2-0. McLaughlin then broke through for SMU in the 88th minute at Denver on Saturday, sending the contest to overtime with a bicycle goal. The No. 8 Mustangs went on to win 2-1 moments later, rising to a perfect 7-0-0 on the season.
Defensive Player of the Week
Andres Hernandez Betancur * So. * D * UCF
Hernandez helped No. 13 UCF pick up its third- and fourth-straight victories this week, as the Knights downed RV Florida Gulf Coast 4-1 and defeated South Carolina 2-0. Against the Gamecocks, Hernandez registered the second assist of his career in the 28th minute for UCF’s second goal. On the week, the Knights held their opponents to just nine shots on goal and extended their unbeaten streak to six games.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Shane Lanson * So. * GK * SMU
Lanson’s record in goal remained unblemished last week, as the sophomore rose to 5-0-0 on the season. In the Mustangs’ 2-0 shutout over No. 2 Duke on Sept. 16, Lanson turned aside all four shots he faced. He then permitted just one goal against Denver with a save as SMU won 2-1 in overtime. On the season, Lanson owns a 0.19 goals against average and a .933 save percentage with 14 total saves.
Rookie of the Week
Gino Vivi * Fr. * F/M * UCF
Vivi registered a six-point week for UCF in a pair of wins, totaling two goals and two assists. The freshman scored his first and second career goals in the Knights’ win at Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 18, finding the back of the net just four minutes in before bookending UCF’s scoring in the 74th minute. Vivi also assisted on the third Knight goal. Against South Carolina on Sunday, he again connected for an assist as UCF prevailed 2-0.
Weekly Honor Roll

Has now found the back of the net in six-straight games for UCF, adding three more this past week; scored twice at Florida Gulf Coast and once against South Carolina to sit tied atop the nation with eight goals
Yannik Oettl * Jr. * GK * UCF
Recorded eight saves with just one goal against in two wins for UCF last week; turned aside a season-high seven shots at Florida Gulf Coast and earned his second shutout with one save against South Carolina
Darryn Commissiong * Jr. * F * Cincinnati
Finished with five points on the week as Cincinnati went 1-1-0, scoring two goals with an assist; registered the lone goal for the Bearcats against No. 24 West Virginia before burying the tying goal in the 90th minute at Bowling Green, helping Cincinnati to a 4-3 win in overtime
Jordan Hall * Sr. * F * UConn
Owns eight of UConn’s 11 goals on the season to sit tied atop the national rankings; scored both opening goals this past week in a 2-0 win over Manhattan and 3-2 loss to Columbia
Alexandros Ierides * Jr. * M * Memphis
Posted both goals for Memphis in the Tigers’ lone game of the week - a 2-0 win at Belmont; found the back of the net in the 44th minute before the insurance tally in the 57th minute
