No. RV Cincinnati (9-4, 1-0) opened American Athletic Conference play for 2019 with an emphatic sweep of East Carolina (12-2, 0-1) at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Friday night. The Bearcats raced past the Pirates 25-14, 25-20, 25-16.
 
Jordan Thompson established the career kills record at Cincinnati during the victory, surpassing the previous mark of 2,137 kills set by Julie DuPont from 2001-04. Thompson notched a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs against ECU, while Maria Mallon posted team highs of 17 kills and 13 digs for the Bearcats. Armania Heckenmueller added in 43 assists in the win for Cincinnati.
 
Sydney Kleinman led ECU with eight kills and chipped in four digs, while Bri Wood added a team-high 12 digs and five kills.
 
UCF 3, UConn 0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-11)
 
UCF (8-5, 1-0) was victorious in its conference home opener at The Venue in Orlando, Florida, racing past UConn (6-7, 0-1) with scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-11. The Knights hit an impressive .411 attack percentage for the match, limiting the visiting Huskies to a mere .053 clip.
 
McKenna Melville recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs to lead UCF, and Kristina Fisher contributed nine kills and seven digs for the Knights. Erin Olson added a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs.
 
Caylee Parker paced UConn with 11 kills and added five digs. Courtney Morris added 17 assists and six digs in the defeat for the Huskies.
 
USF 3, Temple 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18)
 
USF (7-8, 1-0) was the third straight home team to sweep on conference opening night, blanking Temple (9-3, 0-1) in straight sets 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 in Tampa, Florida.
 
Jac’cara Walker finished the match with 11 kills and eight digs in the win for USF, as CC Clausen fashioned a team-high 13 digs. Rafaela Biegelmeyer kicked in 35 assists and eight digs for the Bulls.
 
For Temple, Peyton Boyd led the way with 12 kills. Averi Salvador chipped in a team-high 14 digs, and Tyler Lindgren added 27 assists and four digs.
 
Tulane 3, Memphis 2 (25-12, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 16-14)
 
Tulane (11-3, 1-0) needed five sets to dispatch of Memphis (11-2, 0-1) on Friday night at Fogelman Arena in New Orleans. The Green Wave held off the Tigers by a final score of 25-12, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 16-14.
 
Lexie Douglas (18 kills and 10 digs) and Makala Heidelberg (12 kills and 17 digs) both posted double-doubles in the win for Tulane, while Kaylie McHugh added a team-high 20 digs. Kayla Dinkins added seven kills and a match-high seven blocks.
 
Sabrina Bianco turned in an impressive 54 assists and 21 digs in defeat for Memphis, and Kaitlyn Gehler added a match-high 22 digs for the Tigers. Meredith Wallace led all players with 19 kills and chipped in 14 digs.
 
Tulsa 3, Wichita State 2 (25-21, 21-25, 26-24, 17-25, 15-10)
 
Tulsa (8-6, 1-0) fought off visiting Wichita State (3-10, 0-1) to close opening night around the league with a five-set victory in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Golden Hurricane won the contest by a final of 25-21, 21-25, 26-24, 17-25, 15-10.
 
Taylor Horsfall notched an American Athletic Conference season-high with 38 digs in the win for Tulsa, adding six assists to the Golden Hurricane cause. Dilara Gedikoglu recorded a match-high 18 kills to go along with nine digs and three blocks, and Kayley Cassaday registered 10 kills.
 
Megan Taflinger led Wichita State with 17 kills in defeat, and Kara Brown chipped in 25 digs for the Shockers.
 
Houston 3, SMU 2 (15-25, 14-25, 27-25, 25-20, 16-14)
 
Houston (7-9, 1-0) battled back from a two-set deficit to stun SMU (7-4, 0-1) in the conference opener for both teams on Friday in Houston, Texas. The Cougars emerged with a five-set win with scores of 15-25, 14-25, 27-25, 25-20, 16-14.

Megan Duncan led Houston in the win with 18 kills and added 12 digs for a double-double, while Abbie Jackson contributed 14 kills and six digs. Katie Karbo added a team-high 19 digs, and Abby Irvine contributed a double-double with 16 assists and 11 digs.

Mekenzi Heckmann finished with a match-high 22 kills for SMU, and Rachel Woulfe chipped in 14 kills. Montana Watts led all players with 21 digs.
