UConn 3, Iona 0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-22)
 
UConn earned a victory to kick off its 2019 home schedule by sweeping Iona 25-23, 25-16 and 25-22 at the UConn Challenge in Storrs, Connecticut. UConn improved to 2-2 on the young season with the win.
 
The Huskies raced out to a 13-7 lead in the opening set and withstood numerous charges from the Gaels that trimmed the UConn edge to just one point. Iona tied the first frame at 23-all by holding serve, but UConn battled back for the final two points to claim the first set 25-23.
 
UConn took a commanding two-sets-to-none lead by racing past Iona in the second stanza. The Huskies won 10 of 12 points to build an 18-10 edge, and Caylee Parker helped finish off the set win with the last four kills of period two for UConn.
 
The Huskies put away the contest in the third set, breaking away from Iona after the Gaels trimmed the UConn lead to 9-7 in the early going of the deciding set. The Huskies claimed 11 of the next 16 points to extend their advantage to 20-12. Despite Iona pulling back within one point at 23-22, UConn broke the Gaels serve and finished off the victory with a Mia Ruffolo service ace.
 
Parker led all players with a season-high 18 kills, hitting at a .424 clip and capping off the double-double for UConn with 14 digs. Courtney Morris chipped in 39 assists and 12 digs, and Jasmine Davis notched 10 kills for the Huskies.
 
San Jose State 3, Wichita State 1 (16-25, 18-25, 25-14, 19-25)
 
Wichita State logged an emphatic victory in set three to pull back into the match, but was unable to overcome San Jose State in a 3-1 defeat (16-25, 18-25, 25-14, 19-25) to open the Cal Poly ShareSLO Mustang Challenge in San Luis Obispo, California. The Shockers fell to 2-2 in 2019 with the setback.
 
Wichita State exploded out to a 6-1 lead in the third set, scoring four straight points behind the serve of McKayla Wuensch. Two service aces by California native Megan Taflinger extended the Shockers advantage to 14-7. Back-to-back Taflinger kills by way of Wuensch upped the Wichita State cushion to 20-10 before the teams traded points all the way to a 25-14 set win for Wichita State.
 
Wuensch led Wichita State by posting a double-double of 26 assists and 12 digs against San Jose State. Taflinger added a team-high 11 kills, while Sina Uluave logged 11 digs and eight kills for the Shockers.
 
SMU 3, Oral Roberts 2 (26-24, 24-26, 25-14, 12-25, 16-14)
 
After a trip to the Coastal Carolina Classic was cancelled by Hurricane Dorian, SMU instead hit the road for Tulsa, Oklahoma, to take on Oral Roberts in a Thursday nonconference tilt. The Mustangs outlasted the Golden Eagles in a five-set thriller, 26-24, 24-26, 25-14, 12-25, 16-14, to improve to 3-1 on the season and give head coach Lisa Seifert her 400th career win at SMU.
