Jackson, McHugh Earn Top Volleyball Honors For Week Two


PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly volleyball honors for the week ending Sunday, Sept. 8.
Offensive Player of the Week
Abbie Jackson * Fr. * OH * Houston

Jackson guided Houston to a 4-0 week, which included an undefeated showing and a nod on the UTSA Classic All-Tournament Team. She totaled a conference-high 87 kills in 16 sets, averaging 5.44 kills per set, and chipped in nine service aces over her four matches. Jackson opened the week with a then career-high 25 kills and a .383 attack percentage in a four-set win over McNeese. She followed that up in her next start with 30 kills in four sets against UTSA, the most by any American Athletic Conference player thus far this season. Jackson capped the tournament for the Cougars with a double-double of 16 kills and 14 digs in a win over No. RV Maryland and 16 kills and three aces in a victory against UTRGV.
Defensive Player of the Week
Kaylie McHugh * Sr. * DS/L * Tulane
McHugh was named the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Volleyball Classic Defensive MVP to cap a four-match week for Tulane in New Orleans. Her 85 digs paced all conference players, with an average of 5.31 digs per set, and she was responsible for only two reception errors over 16 total sets played. McHugh began the week with 25 digs and six assists in a nonconference match against Southeastern Louisiana. She added 13 digs and 18 digs, respectively, in three-set sweeps of Missouri State and Houston Baptist. In a five-set Sunday thriller with Ole Miss, McHugh logged a double-double for the Green Wave with 29 digs and 12 assists.

Jordan Thompson * R-Sr. * RS/OH * Cincinnati
Named the MVP of the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational at Michigan State after logging 53 kills over 10 sets, averaging 5.30 kills per set; finished with a match-high 26 kills while hitting .417 in a sweep of No. 21 Tennessee and logged a double-double (10 kills, 14 digs) to clinch the tournament title against Indiana State
Hannah Flowers * Jr. * RS * Memphis
Led Memphis to a sweep of the Tiger Brawl with a team-high 28 kills and 14 service aces; her seven aces in a win over UT-Martin tied the American Athletic Conference individual record for aces in a four-set match (Memphis’ 14 aces established a team conference benchmark for a four-set contest) and supplemented her 15 kills
Averi Salvador * Jr. * DS/L * Temple
Named the MVP of the American Volleyball Classic and led Temple to three victories on the strength of her 58 digs over 11 sets, averaging 5.27 digs per set; notched her first career double-double with 20 digs and 12 assists in a win over Ohio and added 20 digs in a sweep of Winthrop
Taylor Horsfall * Sr. * DS/L * Tulsa
Named to the KC Roos Klassic All-Tournament Team after leading Tulsa with 54 digs for the week, an average of 5.40 digs per set; recorded 20 digs against Louisiana Tech and 22 digs against host Kansas City in a pair of four-set victories
McKenna Melville * So. * OH * UCF
Led UCF to a weekend sweep and tournament victory in the UCF Challenge after registering 44 kills and 35 digs over nine sets; accounted for 21 kills and added nine digs against South Carolina and contributed 18 kills and 16 digs for a double-double against Albany
