UConn 19, Fairfield 12
STORRS, Conn. – Junior Sydney Watson led the way with six goals as UConn opened the 2020 campaign with a 19-12 win over Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon. Seven Huskies recorded two or more points in the season opener.
Watson scored six goals on 10 shots and added three ground balls and eight draw controls. Senior Olivia Miles added four goals of her own and tallied three ground balls. Sophomores Lia LaPrise and Casey O'Grady got on the scoresheet with two goals and two assists each.
Junior Stephanie Palmucci tallied a goal and three helpers. Fellow junior Abby Vetsch had a goal, an assist, and three draw controls. Freshman Madelyn George scored her first collegiate goal and added a ground ball and a draw control.
The Huskies and Stags began the game exchanging goals until UConn broke through and took a 7-3 lead. UConn would lead the rest of the way, with its biggest lead of the game coming in the second half at 18-9.
The Huskies head to Maryland to take on James Madison in a neutral site game at the US Lacrosse Headquarters. The game is scheduled for Sunday at noon.
Rutgers 13, Temple 11
PHILADELPHIA – Temple fell 13-11 to visiting Rutgers on Wednesday at Howarth Field. The Owls' season record moves to 1-1 to start the season, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 2-0.
Temple fell behind early, as Rutgers scored the first four goals of the game en route to a 6-4 halftime lead. The Owls turned the tables with an extended run to open the second half, regaining the momentum in the contest with five unanswered tallies in the first eight minutes to lead 9-6.
Rutgers narrowed the Owls' lead to 9-8 but goals from Abaigeal Ryan and Wynston Archer stopped the Rutgers surge, putting Temple up 11-8 with 15 minutes left in the game.
The Scarlet Knights countered with five unanswered goals re-taking the lead, 13-11 with 4:19 to play.
Temple was unable to tally the equalizer in the closing minutes, as the Owls dropped their first game of the season.
Junior Jen Rodzewich and freshman Belle Mastropietro each scored twice in the game, while Mastropietro added five draw controls and four ground balls. Senior Maddie Gebert finished with a goal and an assist, while six other players got on the board for the Owls.
Goalkeeper Maryn Lowell notched three saves, while Olivia Martin (two saves) and Eryn Beal (one save) also split minutes between the pipes.
Temple continues its extended homestead on Saturday, hosting No. 6 Princeton at 1 p.m.
