The UConn baseball team overcame multiple deficits in difficult conditions to beat No. 1 Michigan, 8-7, on Friday afternoon at the Mets Spring Training Complex. The Huskies spotted the Wolverines a 5-0 lead after the first inning after issuing four walks, one hit batter and one wild pitch in the opening frame.
A young trio of arms helped hold down the Wolverines while the UConn offense climbed its way out of the early hole. Sophomore Will Lucas put together a career-best performance with 2.1 innings of one-run ball that featured just one hit and six strikeouts.
After a furious comeback, Chris Winkel kicked off t he ninth inning rally with a two-strike double and came around to score the go-ahead run on a Christian Fedko RBI single, giving UConn its first lead of the day. Caleb Wurster came on and locked down his first save of 2020 with a scoreless ninth. The victory was the first for UConn over the No. 1 team in the country since defeating No. 1 Notre Dame in South Bend in 2001.
It was the first victory for a team from The American over a No. 1-ranked squad since UCF defeated Florida on March 1, 2018.
Memphis 7, Dayton 2 -

A six-run sixth inning propelled Memphis to a 7-2 win in its series opener against Dayton on Friday afternoon at FedExPark. Facing a 2-0 deficit, Memphis posted a run in the fifth inning to get on the board, while six runs on five hits in the sixth inning helped the Tigers complete the comeback win.
Juniors Ben Brooks and Chris Swanberg each drove in a pair of runs. Junior Zach Wilson tallied his first career multiple-hit performance in the Blue and Gray with a 2-for-3 day at the plate and a run scored.
UCF 3, No. 8 Auburn 1 -

In the first game of a three-game set in Auburn, Ala., UCF took down the No. 8 Auburn Tigers 3-1 at Plainsman Park on Friday night. Starting pitcher Colton Gordon set the tone for the game, picking up six of his seven strikeouts in the first three innings.
The Tigers took an early lead in the bottom of the second, striking first with a solo homer from Scheffler. Colton Gordon settled in and fanned seven batters through the rest of his 6.0 innings to hold the Auburn offense off the board.
The Knights answered the Tigers attack in the fourth inning as Tom Josten and Jordan Rathbone teamed up with a double by Josten followed by a Rathbone single to drive in the runner. Nick Romano would drive in Rathbone to give UCF a 2-1 lead before the end of the inning.
Wichita State 5, Texas Southern 2 -

Wichita State (2-2) earned a 5-2 victory over the Texas Southern Tigers (0-7) in its 2020 home opener Friday, Feb. 21, at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field. The victory was the first official home triumph for new Shocker head coach Eric Wedge.
Five Shockers pounded out two hits in the contest, led by junior outfielder Hunter Gibson, who went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Jack Sigrist (1) and Ross Cadena (2) also compiled doubles in the contest, while freshman Derek Shaver had a pair of hits in three at bats in his home debut.
Junior right-hander Jake Hamilton (1-1) posted his first win on the mound at Wichita State, tossing five innings and allowing one earned run on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks, Fellow junior righty Foster Gifford locked down his inaugural save at Wichita State after throwing a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

Houston recorded a seven-run fourth inning en route to an 11-4 win over Stanford in the opener of the inaugural Round Rock Classic on Friday night at Dell Diamond.
Senior left-handed pitcher Lael Lockhart Jr. (1-0) picked up his first win of the season. The native of Friendswood, Texas, worked around one run on four hits while striking out four and walking three over 4.2 innings.
Blake Way turned in a 2-for-2 showing with a career-high three RBI, along with one run scored and a sac fly. Ryan Hernandez hit his team-leading third home run of the season in a 1-for-4 effort. His three RBI were also a career high.
Tulane 1, No. 24 Cal State Fullerton 0 -

Tulane junior Braden Olthoff hurled a complete-game three-hit shutout, striking out 16 batters to tie for the third-most by a pitcher in a single game as Tulane opened its series with Cal State Fullerton with a 1-0 win Friday night at Goodwin Field.
At one point, Olthoff (2-0) retired 12 consecutive batters midway through the game to keep the Titan (2-3) batters frustrated for most of the night. It's the most strikeouts in a game for a Tulane (5-0) pitcher since Kaleb Roper struck out 12 against Houston Baptist last season, as well as the last complete-game victory for a Tulane pitcher since the win over UCF by Roper in the conference tournament last May. Josh Bobbitt in 1998 was the last Green Wave pitcher to have 16 strikeouts in a contest.
Tulane produced six hits in the game, led by Grant Mathews who had two for the Green Wave. The first five batters in the Tulane order produced all six hits for the team, which include Haydan Hastings, as for the second consecutive Friday the junior brought in the game-winning run for the squad.
No. 12 Florida State 11, Cincinnati 4 -

Cincinnati grabbed an early lead but could not hold off No. 12 Florida State Friday night in the series-opener, losing 11-4.
Evan Shawver had a great start on the mound, going 5.0 innings with one run, no hits, four walks and nine strikeouts. He left the game with the lead. Jace Mercer had a big day at the plate, doubling in his first two at-bats then hitting a solo home run in his final plate appearance.
