Wichita State Extends Win Streak in Midweek Action

Tulane scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning to highlight an incredible offense display on the way to an 18-2 seven-inning win over the Texas Southern Tigers Tuesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
 
After Tulane (10-2) starter Luke Jannetta (3-0) sent the first three Texas Southern (3-11) batters down in order, the Green Wave put the game away with a first inning firework show.
  
Grant Mathews recorded three hits including a home run and four RBI, while Luis Aviles had two hits and five RBI. Collin Burns put together three hits and Hudson Haskin reached base all five times he came to the plate.

Wichita State 15, Air Force 4 - Box Score
A seven-run fifth-inning helped Wichita State turn back the Air Force Falcons, 15-4, in the opening game of a two-game set Tuesday, March 3, at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field.
 
Freshman Couper Cornblum went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple, four RBI, three runs scored and two walks, while junior Hunter Gibson added a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in a game-high six runs, leading the Shockers.
 
Senior right-handed starter Preston Snavely (2-1) earned the victory on the mound after allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk in four innings.
 
After spotting the Falcons an early 1-0 lead on an error in the top of the first, Wichita State came roaring back, plating a combined 12 runs in innings three, four and five.

No. 14 UCF 6, Jacksonville 0 - Box Score
No. 14 UCF teed off in their midweek contest against Jacksonville, blasting four home runs on their way to a 6-0 victory Tuesday night. UCF has now defeated the Dolphins eight of the last 10 times the two programs have met and the Black and Gold moves to 12-2 on the season.

The Knights relied on solid pitching early in the contest as five pitchers combined to allow just two hits in the contest. Jaylyn Whitehead got the starting nod for the second midweek matchup in a row, holding Jacksonville scoreless for 3.2 innings.

UCF's offense woke up in the sixth inning in a big way, as the Knights put up four runs on three homers in the inning. Tom Josten got the show started for UCF, putting a dent in the hood of a car in the outfield parking lot. Two batters later, Dalton Wingo and Pablo Ruiz sent back-to-back solo shots over the left field wall to give the Knights a 3-0 lead. Matt Archer capped off the inning with an RBI single.

Kentucky 12, Cincinnati 4 - Box Score
Cincinnati made the midweek trip down to Kentucky Tuesday night, falling 12-4 in the first midweek contest of the season. The game was back-and-forth at the start until UK was able to pull away with a four-run fourth inning. UC continued to swing the bats well with 13 hits.
 
Jace Mercer went 3-for-4 with two RBI out of the leadoff spot. Joey Wiemer was 2-for-4 on the night. Paul Komistek finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

No. 9 Ole Miss 8, Memphis 1 - Box Score
Memphis baseball's seven-game win streak was snapped Tuesday night after an 8-1 setback at No. 9 Ole Miss at Swayze Field.
 
The Rebels took advantage of a season-high 11 walks and five wild pitches issued by the Tigers pitching staff throughout the evening. Playing on the road for just the second time this season, Memphis entered the contest with just over three walks per game and eight total wild pitches this year.
 
Offensively, Memphis freshman Max Hildreth collected a two-hit night, going 2-for-4 with a double, while sophomore Hunter Goodman drove in the lone Tiger run. Two runs in the first and fourth innings for the Rebels built a 4-1 lead, while one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames set the final.

Wichita State 2, Air Force 0

Wichita State extended its winning streak to nine games with a 2-0 shutout victory over the United States Air Force Academy Falcons Wednesday, March 4, at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field. The nine straight wins marks the longest winning streak for Wichita State baseball since it won 10 straight during the 2008 season.
 
The WSU pitching staff of Tommy Barnhouse, Ryan Stuempfig, Connery Peters and Foster Gifford teamed-up to throw Wichita State's first shutout of 2020. Barnhouse (2-0) earned the victory after throwing six scoreless innings and scattering five hits with five strikeouts and just one walk, while Gifford locked-down his team-best third save after tossing a scoreless ninth with a strikeout.
 
The Shockers had only two hits in the game, but that proved to be enough. Hunter Gibson provided the opening run for Wichita State in the bottom of the first, driving in David VanVooren, who worked a one-out walk, on a two-out double that hit off the wall in left-center, giving WSU a 1-0 lead. The Shockers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Alex Jackson reached via an error, before stealing second and coming around to score on Jacob Katzfey's two-out single to right field.

No. 22 ECU 11, Liberty 0 - Box Score
Bryson Worrell blasted his fifth home run of the season, while five pitchers combined limited Liberty to just one hit in No. 22 East Carolina's 11-0 shutout Tuesday at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the win the Pirates improve to 9-3 on the season and the Flames fall to 8-5.
 
Worrell, who has hit five home runs in the last six games, staked ECU to an early 3-0 lead after belting a three-run shot to left field in the first frame. Zach Agnos singled up the middle with one out and moved over to third on a failed pickoff move by Jackson Haga. Two batters later Seth Caddell walked to put runners on the corners for Worrell. After a pitching change in the middle of hit at-bat, Worrell flipped from the left side of the box to the right and took a 3-1 offering from Christian Gordon high over the wall.
 
Garrett Saylor (2-0) got the win tossing three scoreless frames of relief with a pair of strikeouts on a bullpen day. 

Houston 6, Rice 4 - Box Score
Houston picked up a 6-4 win over Rice on Wednesday night at Reckling Park. The Cougars improved to 4-7, while the Owls fell to 2-10. Houston took game one of the Silver Glove Series against the Owls. The two teams will meet again on March 31 at Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.

Tyler Bielamowicz led the way with a 3-for-4 effort, finishing with a double and three RBI. Ian McMillan finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Tanner Green earned his first win of the season, pitching 2.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen.
