PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The American Athletic Conference announced its weekly men’s basketball honors for March 9.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Christian Vital, Sr., G, UConn
Vital averaged 27.0 points in a pair of wins while aiding the Huskies to the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament. The senior guard had 26 points and made eight consecutive free throws down the stretch to secure a 77-71 win over Houston before scoring 28 points in a road win at Tulane.
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Precious Achiuwa, F, Memphis
Achiuwa averaged a double-double with 19.5 points and 15.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Tigers. The freshman posted his 18th double-double of the season with 25 points and 15 rebounds against Houston on Sunday. Achiuwa is the only freshman in the nation averaging a double-double.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Keith Williams, Jr., G, Cincinnati
Williams averaged 20.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals in a 2-0 week the Bearcats, including a career-high 30 points at USF on Tuesday (March 3).
Darin Green Jr., Fr., G, UCF
Green Jr. averaged 18.0 points in a pair of wins for the Knights while shooting 59.1 percent from the field and 56.3 percent from 3-point range.
Quentin Grimes, So., G, Houston
Grimes came off the bench to average 20.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Cougars. He scored 24 points against UConn.
Laquincy Rideau, Sr., G, USF
Rideau averaged 13.5 points, 7.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 steals in a 1-1 week for the Bulls. The senior hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to defeat SMU on Saturday (March 7).
Martins Igbanu, Sr., F, Tulsa
Igbanu averaged 18.5 points and shot 61.9 percent from the field in a 1-1 week for the Golden Hurricane, who captured a share of the regular season title in the win at Temple.
