IRVING, Texas – The field is set for the 2021 American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship. With a win over Temple on Thursday, South Florida captured the No. 1 seed and won The American’s regular-season crown for a second straight season.
The tournament features a single-elimination format with the first round on Sunday, Oct. 31. South Florida (11-3-2, 6-1-1 American Athletic Conference) will host the semifinals on Nov. 4 and the final on Nov. 7. The semifinals will be streamed live on ESPN+, while the final will air live on ESPNEWS. The tournament champion will earn the league’s automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship.
In the first-round matchups, No. 3 seed Memphis (11-4-1, 5-3-0) will host sixth-seeded UCF (8-6-1, 3-4-1) and No. 4 seed SMU (10-2-2, 4-2-2) will host No. 5 seed East Carolina (8-8-2, 3-3-2). Houston (13-4-2, 5-2-1) earned the No. 2 seed and will have a bye into the semifinals along with South Florida.
South Florida earned the No. 1 seed after winning on the road at Temple, 2-0, while Houston claimed the second seed after earning a 2-0 road victory over Tulsa. Memphis jumped SMU in the standings by way of a 5-0 victory over the Mustangs. Cincinnati defeated UCF, 3-1, in the other conference matchup on Thursday evening.
It is South Florida’s third regular season crown in four years. Houston finished with its highest place in The American’s standings in program history, with its previous best being sixth in 2019. Memphis finished in the top three of the league standings for a fourth-consecutive season. SMU finished fourth in the standings, the highest place for the Mustangs since 2018 (tied for fourth).
The Bulls are the two-time defending champion of the American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship and have won three of the last four tournament crowns.
