No. 18/20 South Florida 57, No. 7/5 Stanford 54
NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Sydni Harvey's 3-pointer from the wing with 2.8 seconds left sent No. 18 South Florida to a 57-54 win over seventh-ranked Stanford in the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship tournament on Friday.
Led by Harvey's 15 points, South Florida posted its second victory over a top-10 opponent this week and only the third overall for the program. Bethy Mununga matched a career high with 23 rebounds, to go along with six points.
In addition, Harvey became the 25th player in program history to score 1,000 career points.
Trailing by two in the final seconds, Harvey caught a pass from the corner and swished the 3-pointer in front of the Bulls' bench.
Stanford (4-1) couldn't recover.
The Bulls (5-2) completed a difficult stretch, playing four ranked teams in their last five games. Before coming to the Bahamas, South Florida lost at Tennessee. Coach Jose Fernandez's team then played UConn tough before losing and beat then-No. 9 Oregon in the third-place game of the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Cameron Brink had 23 points and 11 rebounds for Stanford.
Stanford rallied from 12 down and took a 53-52 lead on Lacey Hull's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 14.1 seconds left. After a miss by South Florida, Brooke Demetre hit one of two free throws to make it a two-point game and set up Harvey's big shot.
Elisa Pinzan added two free throws for the final margin as Stanford couldn't get a shot off before the buzzer.
South Florida led 28-19 at halftime and increased its advantage to 12 before Stanford started to rally behind its 3-point shooting. The Cardinal tied it at 42 early in the fourth quarter before South Florida scored five straight. Stanford rallied and took its first lead of the game with 4:18 left on Demetre's 3-pointer from the wing.
Neither team scored again until Elena Tsineke's floater in the lane with 2:05 remaining. After more misses, Mununga grabbed her 23rd rebound with 27.8 seconds left and was fouled. She hit the second of two free throws to make it 52-50.
Stanford wanted to play a third game while on this trip east so the contest against South Florida was added. The Bulls played in the other tournament on the island, finishing third at the inaugural Battle 4 Atlantis event.
Tulsa 70, Florida Atlantic 68
Maya Mayberry had a season-best 23 points, while Temira Poindexter added 18, Wyvette Mayberry posted 11 and Maddie Bittle scored 10 to give Tulsa a 70-68 win over FAU on Friday afternoon in the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament at Abessinio Court at FAU Arena in Boca Raton, Fla. The Golden Hurricane moved to 5-0 on the season, while the Owls fell to 2-3 overall.
Rebecca Lescay added a team-best eight rebounds and five assists, while Poindexter had three steals.
"I am so proud of this team and how hard they fought today," Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "The team really helped each other. Maya is a tremendous player and the way she played today against different defenses was great, and then she hit three three's in a row which gave us momentum and turned the game. Her energy spread throughout our team. It is so fun on the bench because they get excited for each other, and it is good to see our players be successful."
For the game, Tulsa shot 45.8-percent from the field, 43.8-percent from behind the arc and 75-percent from the free throw line, while FAU was 41.5-percent from the field, 42.1-percent from three-point range and 80-percent from the line.
TU had a 7-4 advantage in steals and a 4-2 lead in blocks, while FAU had a 37-30 lead in rebounds and both teams had 15 assists.
After trailing 9-2 at the 7:31 mark of the first quarter, Tulsa pulled to within two, 13-11, with 2:25 to play in the frame. The Owls owned a 17-11 advantage at the end of the quarter after shooting 37.5-percent compared to the Hurricane's 28.6-percent.
Two three-pointers by Maya Mayberry to begin the second quarter tied the contest at 17-17 at the 8:50 mark while a layup by Wyvette Mayberry gave TU their first lead of the day, 21-19, with 6:58 to play in the frame. TU outscored FAU, 14-4, in the first five minutes of the quarter to own a 25-21 advantage at the 5:17 mark and had a 24-8 scoring edge in the frame for a 35-25 lead at halftime.
Tulsa hit 76-percent (10-of-13) of their field goal attempts in the second period, including 66-percent (4-of-6) from behind the arc, while FAU shot just 23-percent in the second quarter.
Tulsa had a 14-point lead, 45-31, at the 5:53 mark of the third quarter, but the Owls scored eight straight points to pull within six, 45-39, with 2:46 to play in the frame. TU outscored FAU, 8-2, to close out the quarter with a 53-41 advantage.
FAU cut their deficit to just one, 60-59, at the 2:48 mark of the fourth quarter after outscoring TU, 18-7, in the frame. The Owls trailed by just one point again, 62-61, with 2:18 on the clock, but a layup and a free throw made by Poindexter made it a four-point game for Tulsa, 65-61.
Amber Gaston hit two free throws with just 1:05 on the clock to pull FAU within two, 65-63, but Poindexter hit two big free throws with just 20 seconds on the clock and Maddie Bittle scored a free throw with 19 seconds remaining to put Tulsa up by five, 68-63. Gaston then scored on a layup for a 68-65 score, but Maya Mayberry scored two free throws and then Alexa Zaph scored a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final score.
FAU was led by Janeta Rozentale with 16 points, while Rita Pleskevich had 15, Gaston had 14 and Zaph added 12. Rozentale had 10 rebounds, while Sofia Galeron added eight boards.
Fordham 67, Houston 53
Despite Tatyana Hill leading all scorers with 19 points, the Houston women's basketball team dropped its contest to Fordham, 67-53 on Friday afternoon in the Cancun Challenge.
Tatyana Hill finished the game with 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, one steal and one block. Britney Onyeje contributed nine points as well as four rebounds and three steals.
The game was evenly matched through the first quarter with the two teams fighting for the lead. Fordham went ahead by four points but four straight bucks from the Cougars gave the lead to Houston 14-12. The quarter closed with Fordham ahead 15-14.
In the second quarter, the two teams continued to trade points before Fordham managed to take a five-point lead going into halftime, 32-27.
Fordham continued its momentum going into the third quarter and eventually took a 13-point lead. However, the Cougars fought back, chipping away the Rams lead until the final moments of the quarter as a jumper from Laila Blair brought the game within five points at 48-43.
The Cougars were unable to connect on baskets in the fourth quarter as Fordham went on an 11-0 run to make the score 59-43. The Rams held a 10+ point lead for the rest of the game and took the win 67-53.
Memphis 73, Loyola Marymount 65
The Tigers picked up their third consecutive win this afternoon when they handed Loyola Marymount the 73-65 loss in the opening game of the LMU Thanksgiving Classic.
Following today's win, Memphis moves to 5-1 overall.
Memphis found themselves in a hole early after the Lions came out with a 6-2 lead through the first two minutes of the game. The Tigers would take their first lead of the game midway through the first quarter when Maya Stovall found her way through the LMU defense for an easy layup.
After four lead changes through the final five minutes of the quarter, Memphis would take a 20-18 lead going into the second frame.
The Memphis offense would catch a spark in the second quarter, going on a 7-0 run to extend their lead out to 31-26. After back-and-forth buckets between the Tigers and Lions, Coriah Beck would lay in Memphis' final basket of the half and give them the 37-32 lead.
The Tigers scoring efforts continued into the third quarter; Alana Davis, Jamirah Shutes, Madison Griggs and Lanetta Williams all scored in the opening three minutes of the second half to give Memphis their largest lead of the day at 13. But LMU's offense would start to chip away at their deficit late in the third quarter, and eventually regain the lead with 6:52 left in regulation.
LMU's Nicole Rodriguez and Ariel Johnson would combine for seven made free-throws to give the Lions their first lead since 1:40 in the first quarter. Memphis would rally for 13 straight points from Shutes, Davis, Emani Jefferson and Tyler Frierson to take a 70-60 lead with 1:48 left in the game. While LMU's offense would attempt a second comeback, Memphis' defense held steady and gave them the 73-65 win and the team's third straight victory.
Jamirah Shutes led the way with 16 points while Emani Jefferson added in 10 points. Coriah Beck came off the bench for nine points and dished out three assists while Tyler Frierson grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
As a team, Memphis shot 54% from the field and scored 52 of their 73 points in the paint.
Tulane (RV) 73, Wyoming 67
The duo of Krystal Freeman and Mia Heide delivered the Tulane University women's basketball team a 73-67 victory over Wyoming in the Pioneer Thanksgiving Classic on Friday.
After posting just two points in the first half, Heide found her rhythm in the second half scoring 16 points in the final 20 minutes. The redshirt junior finished with a career-high 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
Freeman got the offense going early for the Green Wave with 12 of her 19 points coming in the first quarter. The Pineville, Louisiana, native put in work on the glass as well finishing with 10 rebounds to post her 25th career double-double and her third this season.
The next top scorers for the Green Wave were Dynah Jones with 11 points and Sierra Cheatham. Moon Ursin made her presence felt without having to score as she finished with 10 rebounds, seven assists and four points.
As a team, Tulane shot 52.6 percent from the field and 46.7 percent from beyond the arc. Freeman and Cheatham led the Green Wave from the outside combining for all seven makes for the Green Wave in the contest.
The deep ball was falling early for the Green Wave as it hit five triples in the opening quarter with Freeman leading the way knocking down 4-of-4 in the quarter. Tulane and Wyoming went back and forth with five ties during the first quarter, but Tulane outscored the Cowgirls 10-5 in the final three minutes and change to take a 21-16 advantage into the next frame.
In the second quarter, Tulane and the Cowgirls exchanged the lead seven times after Wyoming began to find the ranges from beyond the arc. The Wave shot 50 percent from the field in the quarter, but five triples from Wyoming had the Cowgirls in front late in the quarter. Tulane executed a nice play off an inbound from the quarter in the final seconds of the half as Heide found a cutting Ursin for a layup to send the Green Wave to the locker room trailing 38-37.
Heide turned it on in the third quarter for the Green Wave. The Austin, Texas, native scored 10 points and pulled down five boards in the frame as Tulane began to claim control of the contest. The Wave outscored Wyoming 17-10 in the quarter to head into the final 10 minutes with a 54-48 lead. Redshirt senior Kaila Anderson tallied her 300th career assist when she found Heide for the final bucket of the quarter.
Tulane extended its lead and maintained its distance for the majority of the fourth quarter. Heide and Jones paced the Wave in the quarter with six and four points, respectively. The Cowgirls, however, did not go down quietly as they battle to make it a five-point contest in the final minute. The Green Wave knocked down enough free throws in the final moments to put the game on ice and win 73-67.
Wichita State 90, Alcorn State 49
Wichita State scored the game's first 12 points and never looked back in an 90-49 win over Alcorn State Friday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State (5-1) held the Lady Braves to 25 percent shooting and forced 24 turnovers to win its second straight game. The Shockers dominated the smaller Lady Braves inside. Wichita State outrebounded Alcorn 55-29 and outscored them in the paint, 54-6.
Seraphine Bastin scored a team-high 15 points to go with five rebounds, five assists and three steals. She was also perfect from the field, going 5-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Jane Asinde recorded her second straight double-double after being inserted into the starting lineup. She posted 14 points and 11 rebounds on 5-of-8 shooting in three quarters of work.
Wichita State set season highs in points (90), assists (19), field goal percentage (48.5 percent) and rebounds (55).
Wichita State scored the first 12 points of the game after holding Alcorn to an 0-for-5 start from the field with eight turnovers. Alcorn finally broke into the scoring column at the 4:30 mark on a three-pointer.
The Shockers would force 12 first quarter turnovers to take a 22-8 lead into the second quarter.
Wichita State stretched its lead to 32-13 with 4:18 left in the half behind a 10-2 run. Another 7-0 run to close out the half sent Wichita State into the locker room with a 46-21 lead. The 46 first half points were a season high.
Asinde nearly logged a first half double-double, totaling 10 points and nine points, followed by Carla Bremaud with eight.
Wichita State dominated the rebound battle, outrebounding the under-sized Lady Braves by 14 to go with 18 turnovers.
The Shockers opened the third quarter just like the first. They scored the half's first 19 points. Bastin (7) and Mariah McCully (6) combined to score 13 of those points, including a personal 7-0 run for Bastin.
Alcorn finally snapped the run with 4:20 left in the quarter after going 1-of-2 at the line. Wichita State would go on to outscore the Lady Braves, 29-12, in the third quarter.
With the game out of hand for the whole fourth quarter, Wichita State was able to go deep into its bench. All 13 players that suited up, played at least seven minutes, and all but two scored.
UCF (RV) 58, Idaho State 41
The UCF women's basketball team shrugged off a slow start to open the Cancun Challenge with a 58-41 win over Idaho State at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya on Friday evening.
UCF (4-1) found itself down early as Idaho State (1-5) hit its first four shots to take a 10-4 advantage. The Bengals led by as many as eight points, 12-4, in the opening frame before the Knights settled in and cut the lead to two, 15-13, heading into the second period.
The Black and Gold put together an 8-0 spurt on baskets from Tay Sanders, Shania Meertens and Diamond Battles to close the second quarter and take the 27-24 advantage into halftime.
The Knights continued their run in the third quarter, scoring 10 unanswered to open the second half and take a 37-24 edge. The Bengals pulled with eight, 44-36, in the final period, but UCF never allowed Idaho State to get any closer down the stretch.
The UCF defense locked in once again as the Knights forced Idaho State into 28 turnovers. UCF finished with a season-high 15 steals as seven Knights finished with at least one steal.
Diamond Battles poured in a career-high 24 points, shooting 66.7 percent from the field. She also dished out four assists and collected a trio of steals. Brittney Smith joined Battles in double figures, adding 11 to go along with a team-high six rebounds. Alisha Lewis finished with a team-high four steals.
