Alabama 77, Houston 67
Despite a fourth quarter comeback, the Houston women's basketball team lost to Alabama 77-67 on Friday night at the Coleman Coliseum.
Laila Blair still managed to lead the Cougars in score posting 20 points, despite getting in foul trouble early in the game. She added three rebounds and two steals while Tatyana Hill finished the game with eight rebounds to go with nine points. Dymond Gladney scored 12 points with a career-high six steals.
The first quarter started out as an evenly matched game as the two teams traded points. A 3-pointer late in the quarter from Tiara Young gave the Cougars a four-point lead 19-15 and the quarter closed at 19-18.
Alabama found its momentum in the second quarter quickly taking the lead and running with it. An 11-0 run to close out the quarter put the score at 40-26. A 3-pointer from Dymond Gladney brought the score to 40-29 but the quarter closed with the Crimson Tide ahead 41-29.
The Crimson Tide continued its scoring into the third quarter managing a double-digit lead throughout. The quarter ended with Alabama ahead 63-46.
In the fourth, the Cougars began their comeback, slowly chipping away at Alabama's lead. A trey from Blair started a 15-0 run for the Cougars bringing the score to 75-65. However, there wasn't enough time for Houston to overcome its deficit as Alabama ran out the clock with the score at 77-67.
North Texas 84, SMU 58
The SMU women's basketball game was playing its fourth game in nine days Friday when it took on North Texas in the Super Pit Friday night. The contest against a second straight top 25 offense saw SMU come up on the short end of an 84-58 loss.
The game was largely decided at the free throw line, with North Texas (5-2) making 21-of-24 on 24 fouls called on the Mustangs, while SMU (3-5) made just 6-of-13 attempts with 11 fouls against the Mean Green. North Texas also created an advantage outside the arc, making nine 3-pointers on 15 long-range shots while SMU was unable to make a 3 on eight attempts.
Savannah Wilkinson scored a team-high 20 points, eclipsing 20 in back-to-back games and the third time this season. Kayla White added 16 points, scoring in double digits for the fourth time this year. Jasmine Smith had four of SMU's six blocks in the game.
