Houston 72, Jacksonville State 65
Behind double-digit points from Tiara Young and Bria Patterson, the Houston women's basketball team beat Jacksonville State 72-65 on Thursday night to remain undefeated at the Fertitta Center.
Young finished with 18 points with seven assists and two rebounds while Patterson tied her career-high 17 points to go with four rebounds and one steal.
The Cougars had a quick start going on a 5-0 run before the two teams traded points. Five straight points from Jacksonville State gave the Gamecocks a three-point lead at 17-14. However, Houston fought back as layups from Kamryn Jones and Tiara Young put the Cougars ahead at 20-19.
Houston opened the second quarter on another hot streak with five straight points. The Cougars maintained the lead in the second quarter even though JSU brought the score within one point at 34-33. But a Young 3-pointer pushed Houston ahead 37-33 and Britney Onyeje closed the half with a trey to make the score 40-35.
In the third quarter, the Cougars capitalized and scored nine unanswered points for a 13 point lead at 53-40. A 3-pointer from Patterson and a jumper from Young pushed Houston to a 58-44 lead to end the quarter.
Jacksonville State chipped away at Houston's lead going on a 9-0 run bringing the game within six points. Four straight points from the Gamecocks brought the score within four with 1:37 left on the clock, however, it was too late. The Cougars capped their win with three free throws and took the win 72-65.
