Cincinnati Rallies Past Marquette Sunday

02.14.21

Cincinnati came out on top in an offensive shootout against Marquette Sunday to cap the opening weekend for American Athletic Conference teams.

CINCINNATI 20, MARQUETTE 19
CINCINNATI - A goal by Alyssa Adams with 22 seconds left capped a furious second-half comeback for the University of Cincinnati Lacrosse team in a 20-19 win over Marquette, Sunday in the season opener for both teams.

Adams had the ball on the left side of the attacking zone, made a move on one defender, split three more and beat the goalkeeper high with a shot in the back of the net. It was the sixth game-winning goal of her career.

Due to wintry conditions in Cincinnati, the match was played inside the Sheakley Athletics Center Bubble with no fans present. The Bearcats (1-0) trailed 19-17 with 7:24 left and scored three goals in the final 3:49 for the victory.

Monica Borzillo stared the climb back with goals at 3:49 and 1:38, respectively ahead of Adams heartbreaker with 22 ticks left on the clock. UC's scoring possessions were aided by the abilities of Sam Mlkvy who had a school-record 15 draw controls.

Marquette (0-1) showed its ability to be aggressive and score in bunches, going up 4-0 in the opening three-plus minutes and turning a five-goal, second-half deficit into a late two-score lead.

UC's defensive unit didn't surrender a goal in the final 7:24 of the game, locking down late after the Golden Eagles had scored 11 goals in the second half.

UC won its season opener for the first time since 2013 and only the fourth time in program history.  Borzillo and Kylie Nause led the way with five goals apiece. Borzillo added six assists and two draw controls.

Adams finished with four goals and six draw controls. Taylor Gysin added three goals while Peyton Mottice finished with two. Freshman Lindsey Durkota made her UC debut a memorable one, scoring her first career goal early in the second half.
