TUCSON, Ariz. – Ryan Stuempfig, Tommy Barnhouse and Aaron Haase combined to throw five scoreless innings in relief, and Ross Cadena drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the seventh inning as the Wichita State University baseball team took down the 13th-ranked Arizona Wildcats, 10-9, Friday evening, March 12, at Hi Corbett Field.
The victory improves the Shockers to 7-4 on the season and snaps Arizona's 10-game winning streak, dropping the Wildcats to 11-3 overall.
Stuempfig, a redshirt sophomore right-hander from Flower Mound, Texas, improved to 2-0 on the mound this season after entering the game in the bottom of the fifth and firing three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits on 51 pitches with two strikeouts and a walk, while Barnhouse tossed a scoreless eighth inning with a pair of Ks.
A sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, Haase earned his team-best third save of 2021 after retiring the Wildcats in order in the bottom of the ninth inning, sealing the Wichita State win.
With the Shockers trailing, 9-8, entering the top of the seventh inning, Corrigan Bartlett led-off the inning with a single to right, before advancing to second on a one-out balk from Arizona pitcher Ian Churchill.
A ground-out from Couper Cornblum moved Bartlett over the third, before the Wildcat's fifth error of the game allowed him to score the tying run and David VanVooren to reach first, bringing Cadena to the plate. He belted an 0-2 pitch to left field for a double, scoring VanVooren all the way from first base to give Wichita State the 10-9 advantage.

CINCINNATI – A home run by Jake Murray and a pitching gem by LHP Andrew Shawver was the difference as the University of Cincinnati baseball team ran its home winning streak to eight games with a 5-1 win over Western Michigan on Friday.
Murray tattooed the third pitch he saw off the side off Fifth Third Arena, his second home run of the season. The senior transfer also made a highlight-reel catch into the side of the visiting-team bullpen in the ninth inning.
Shawver went 7.0 innings, scattering six hits, no runs or walks and striking out eight. He moved to 2-0 on the season. WMU starter Easton Sikorski took the loss, dropping to 0-1 on the campaign.

Orlando, Fla. – The UCF baseball team won its second of four games against North Florida on Friday night by a score of 6-2. Colton Gordon dominated on the mound going seven innings with 10 strikeouts and only giving up one run. The10 K's matches a career-high for Gordon, his third time fanning 10 in Black and Gold.
The Knights bats jumped on UNF starting pitcher Max McKinley early when Jordan Rathbone took him deep in the first inning to give UCF a 1-0 lead. Rathbone would add a second RBI in the third with a sacrifice fly to plate Gephry Pena, doubling the lead 2-0.
Tom Josten added on to the lead with a two-run single in the fourth and Alex Freeland hit a homer to right field in the fifth making the score 5-0.
East Carolina 7, Charlotte 4 -

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Jake Kuchmaner struck out a career-high 10 batters while his offense tallied 13 hits lifting No. 14 East Carolina to a 7-4 series opening win over Charlotte Friday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the win the Pirates improve to 11-2 on the season, while the 49ers fall to 8-4.
With the game tied at two-all heading to the bottom of the ninth, ECU pushed across to runs retaking the lead at 4-2. Josh Moylan registered the first of four one-out hits with a single through the left side and Bryson Worrell followed with a double to right putting runners at second and third. Ben Newton's RBI single scored Moylan and Ryder Giles' base knock through the right side plated Worrell.
Kuchmaner (2-0) earned the win allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits to go along with his first career double-digit strikeout performance in 5.1 innings. The lefty had at least one punch out in all five of his full frames and had multiple four times, including the side in the first. Gavin Williams earned his first save of the season (second of his career) allowing a pair of runs (both earned) on three this with five strikeouts in 3.2 innings. In all, the duo fanned 15 batters without allowing a walk – the tenth time this year the Pirates pitching staff recorded 10 or more punch outs in a game.
Tulane 9, Troy 4 -

TROY, Ala. – The Tulane University baseball team (7-6) picked up its fourth win in its last five games after it defeated Troy University 9-4 Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field.
Tulane's nine runs were the most it had scored all season and propelled the Green Wave back over .500. The win also handed the Green Wave their eighth straight win in series openers, dating back to last season. The Green Wave offense smashed 13 hits - the second-most they had collected this season.
The 13 hits also marked the fourth time this season Tulane has totaled 10 or more hits in a game. Ten of the Green Wave's 13 hits came in the seventh and eighth innings which translated into seven runs.
Prior to the seventh inning, the game was tied a two apiece. Troy tied the game at two apiece, capitalizing on three Tulane errors in the fifth inning.
After evening the score at two in the fifth, Tulane right-handed starting pitcher Braden Olthoff responded in a big way as he retired eight of the next 10 batters en route to earning his second victory of the season.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Three was the magic number Friday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
Houston Baseball scored three runs in four different innings including three straight frames while Ian McMillan swatted a three-run home run as the Cougars took the series opener against Texas State, 12-3.
On the mound, Houston starter Robert Gasser (2-1) struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed just one run on three hits in 6.0 innings. The 10 strikeouts were the most for a Houston pitcher since Aaron Fletcher fanned 11 against USF on April 7, 2018.
The Cougars (9-4) used three hits in the third inning including an RBI-double from Brandon Uhse and RBI-single from Ryan Hernandez to erase a 1-0 deficit. An inning later, Brad Burckel laced an RBI-triple into right center and came home to score on an RBI-groundout.
Houston continued to pressure Texas State (6-9) in the fifth as Hernandez (3-for-5) singled and Benjamin walked. Two batters later, McMillan walloped a 1-0 pitch off a flagpole in left center for a three-run homer and 9-1 advantage. The homer was McMillan's second of the season and fourth of his career.
Houston produced 13 hits, reaching the double-digit mark for the seventh time this season. The Cougars batted .368 (7-for-19) with runners aboard. Batting in the seventh and eighth spot respectively, McMillan and Burckel combined to go 3-for-8 with five RBIs and three runs.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers returned to FedExPark and took on non-Power Five competition for the first time in two weeks, but in the opener of a three-game series vs. Miami (OH) on Friday, the Memphis offense couldn't get started in a 9-0 shutout to the RedHawks. The Tigers (4-7) managed just five hits, all singles, over seven innings against Grant Hartwig (W, 2-1) and had a runner reach scoring position in just three innings in the loss.
The RedHawks jumped out to a quick start against Blake Wimberley (L, 0-2). The Memphis starter hit the first batter of the game, while Dalton Back followed with an RBI double for a 1-0 lead two batters into the game. Two batters later, a sacrifice fly from Nate Stone made it 2-0 and that proved to be more than enough for the RedHawks.

FORT MYERS (March 12, 2021) – The USF baseball team (7-4) saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end on Friday night in a 7-1 setback at Florida Gulf Coast University (8-4) as the Bulls opened a three-game series with the Eagles.
In a matchup between the reigning AAC Pitcher of the Week for USF, Jack Jasiak, and the ASUN Pitcher of the Week, Mason Studstill, the Eagles' starter shined on his home field.
Jasiak (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season. The redshirt freshman allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits over 5.0 IP while striking out six batters. Studstill earned the win for FGCU, pitching seven scoreless innings while striking out seven and allowing just three hits
The Eagles scored an unearned run against Jasiak in the first inning, and proceeded to score at least once in five of the first seven frames.
