No. 9/13 SMU improved to 2-0 on the young season, defending home field once more with a 3-1 win over Houston Baptist on Thursday night in Dallas. The Mustangs dominated the overall shot count by a 19-8 margin, including an impressive 8-2 clip in shots on goal.
 
Knut Ahlander opened the scoring for SMU in the fifth minute, finishing assists from Papa Ndoye and Kyran Chambron Pinho at 4:26 for a 1-0 lead. Gabriel Costa deposited a feed from Bailey Sparks for her third goal of the year at 16:24, pushing SMU ahead 2-0. After Houston Baptist closed the deficit to 2-1 in the 60th minute, Costa put the match away with his second straight brace, finishing his fourth goal of 2021 at 65:48 to vault SMU ahead 3-1.
