Memphis, SMU Punch Semifinal Places in Women's Soccer Championship

IRVING, Texas – Memphis and SMU won their respective first round matches Sunday, Oct. 30 in the 2022 American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship.
 
No. 6 SMU defeated No. 3 Cincinnati, 1-0, in Cincinnati, while fourth-seeded Memphis needed overtime to take down No. 5 East Carolina, 1-0. SMU (9-3-5) will take on No. 2 South Florida in the first semifinal on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 4 p.m. ET. The Tigers (8-5-4) will face top-seeded UCF in the second semifinal on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.
 
After a scoreless first half in Cincinnati, Courtney Sebazco scored the lone goal in the 70th minute after Julissa Cisneros was fouled in the box.
 
Tatum Sutherland made four saves in goal for the Mustangs and earned a clean sheet, while Anna Rexford recorded three saves for the Bearcats (7-3-7).
 
In Memphis, there were 26 total shots through 90 minutes, but no goals, forcing overtime. Mya Jones received a pass from Grace Stordy in the box in the 99th minute, turned and fired in a goal off the post to give the Tigers the lead.
 
Maeve English recorded six saves for the Pirates (8-8-3), while Claire Wyville made one save in a shutout win for the Tigers.
