Memphis 101, Howard 54 – Box Score
MEMPHIS – The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team had themselves a day as they cruised to a 101-54 win over Howard University.
Following today's game, Memphis moves to 1-1 overall this season.
After trading baskets to open the game, Makaiya Brooks came in off the bench to ignite the Tigers offense. Brooks drained four consecutive three-pointers to push the Memphis lead out to 27-10 with just over two minutes left in the quarter.
Six combined free throws from Jamirah Shutes, Tanyuel Welch and Lanetta Williams would close out the opening quarter to give the Tigers the 33-14 lead.
The Tiger's offense would continue to soar in the second quarter; they would take their largest lead of the half after Shutes sank two of her game-high 10 free throws to put Memphis up 27. The team would take the 55-30 lead into the halftime break.
Memphis got a combined 36 points in the opening half from Brooks, Maddie Griggs and Jamirah Shutes. The team shot an outstanding 56% from the field and drained eight three-pointers in 20 minutes.
Memphis would not let up in the third quarter, pushing their lead out to 32 after Jada Wright completed an -and one with 7:47 remaining in the quarter. The Tigers would finish the third stanza on an 8-0 run after baskets from Shelbee Brown and Emani Jefferson.
It was all Memphis in the final quarter of play, but this time their defense shined.
After Howard was held scoreless for the final 2:20 of the third quarter, the Tiger defense would not let the Bison score until five and a half minutes into the quarter. Their basket by Jenesis Perrin would break the nearly eight-minute scoring drought.
Memphis would get three-pointers from Brooks, Welch and Maddie Griggs to end the game to claim the 101-54 final.
The Tigers got six players in double-digits today with Maddie Griggs and Jamirah Shutes leading the way with 18 points while Makaiya Brooks, Emani Jefferson, Tanyuel Welch and Shelbee Brown all found themselves in double figures. Aliyah Green pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds while Jada Wright blocked four shots.
As a team, Memphis shot 47% from the field 60% from long range.
Temple 78, Georgetown 61 – Box Score
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (1-1, 0-0 American) hammered BIG EAST foe Georgetown (1-1, BIG EAST) in its home opener. The win was the first for Head Coach Diane Richardson, as well as the first in Temple women's basketball's return to the Liacouras Center.
Temple started off hot, but Georgetown quickly responded to take a 7-4 lead. Temple continued to fight despite an injury to Jasha Clinton and early foul trouble for Ines Piper to tie it up 15-15. Clinton came back late in the first quarter to help Temple close out the period strong and take a 19-16 lead. Temple's bench took advantage of its chances and contributed 8 points.
Temple and Georgetown continued playing tight defense to open the second. A three for Georgetown were the only points scored in the opening minutes by the Hoyas. Tying the game 19-19. Temple responded by going on a 7-0 run to take a 26-19 lead. Georgetown slowly cut into the Temple lead as the quarter wore on, but a few timely buckets kept Temple ahead. Aleah Nelson had her way in the first half scoring 8 points and dishing out 4 assists.
Nelson picked up right where she left off by scoring a 4-point play to give Temple a 37-32 lead. The Baltimore native continued giving Temple an offensive spark to lead Temple on quick a 7-0 run. Temple continued dominating the quarter as the extend run became 15-2. Temple led 52-36 at this point. Nelson scored 9 in the quarter as Clinton added 8 to go along with her 3 assists.
Both teams began trading basket to open the quarter. 63-49 Temple lead. The Owls caught fire down the stretch, scoring 18 points in the final eight minutes. Nelson led the way with 19 points while three other Temple players reached double figures.
Omaha 72, Wichita State 67 – Box Score
OMAHA – Wichita State dropped a tightly-contested overtime battle with Omaha, 72-67, Saturday afternoon in Baxter Arena.
Wichita State (1-1) dropped to 20-24 all-time in overtime contests in just the second-ever meeting with Omaha.
Shamaryah Duncan scored a career-high 17 points on a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range to go with six rebounds. Fourteen of her 17 came in the second half and overtime. Trajata Colbert had another solid game, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Curtessia Dean added 13 points – 11 coming after halftime.
DJ McCarty pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to go with seven points and six assists.
The Shockers held a noticeable size advantage, which led to Wichita State outrebounding Omaha 51-36, but a poor shooting day from long distance and 21 turnovers was the difference in the outcome. Omaha outscored Wichita State 20-6 off turnovers and was plus-13 in turnover margin.
Wichita State made the most of its opportunities at the free throw line, going 14-of-16.
Wichita State closed the first quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 13-7 lead into the second period. Ella Anciaux would provide another first half spark off the bench, chipping in five points to help the Shockers build a lead as many as nine in the first half.
With the Shockers leading 24-15 with 3:25 left in the half, Wichita State would not score another point the rest of the way, allowing Omaha to creep back into it. Omaha scored the final five points to make it 24-20 at the half.
McCarty and Colbert finished with six points apiece in the opening 20 minutes and the Shockers held the Mavericks to 6-of-30 from the field and 1-of-10 from beyond the arc.
To start the third quarter, Omaha's Grace Cave went on a personal 8-0 scoring run to give the Mavericks a 28-24 lead.
Omaha would go on to outscore Wichita State 19-12 in the third quarter to take a 39-36 lead into the final period.
The Mavericks pushed the lead to as many as seven with 4:28 to go in the fourth, but Wichita State had one final push left. Wichita State cut the deficit to just a point with under a minute left in regulation before Omaha called a timeout but had no timeouts remaining. That led to two technical free throws for Wichita State and Nhug Bosch Duran promptly converted on both to give Wichita State a 57-56 lead.
After Omaha misfired on a three-pointer on the other end, Duncan proceeded to knock down two more free throws to make it a three-point game with 21 seconds to go.
Wichita State needed just one stop on the defensive end to leave with a win, but Omaha's Grace Cave got a wide open look at a tying triple, which found the bottom of the net. Dean's game-winning floater in the lane fell off the rim, sending the game to overtime tied at 59.
To begin the overtime session, Duncan splashed in a pair of triples, but Omaha had an answer after each one. With the game tied at 65 and 2:23 left, Omaha grabbed a three-point lead with just over a minute to go. Two Colbert free throws cut it to one before the Mavericks iced the game at the free throw line in the final 10 seconds.
New Mexico 68, Houston 61 – Box Score
ALBUQUERQUE – The University of Houston women's basketball team fell to New Mexico on Saturday, 68-61 in The Pit in front of 4,568 fans despite a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds from graduate Tatyana Hill.
New Mexico (1-1) shot more than double the number of free throw attempts as Houston, 29-13, and made double the free throws, 24-12, even though the Cougars shot 92.3 percent from the charity stripe. Houston (0-2) took care of the ball and forced New Mexico into 23 turnovers with 16 steals.
Graduate Tatyana Hill scored 20 points for the first time since Jan. 19, 2020, just shy of her 24-point career-high, and recorded her 10th-career double-double by pulling down 11 boards. Redshirt senior Britney Onyeje posted a team-high five assists in the game as well.
Junior Laila Blair pitched in 18 points of her own and made two of Houston's three three-pointers in the game.
Five different Cougars scored from the field in the first quarter with Blair scoring the first basket for Houston.
The Cougars ended the second period with a 4-0 run to keep the game within three points at the half. Both teams scored 13 points in the second quarter, including five from Blair.
Houston's first lead came with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter thanks to Hill's layup on a perfectly crafted pass from senior Tiara Young. The Lobos went on a 10-2 run over the final three minutes of the quarter to take a 51-44 lead into the final period.
The third period was good for Hill, who scored a game-high 12 points in the quarter and pulled down four rebounds.
The Cougars made it a four-point game with 2:45 to play and then again with 0:33 to play, but were unable to cut the deficit anymore.
