MIAMI, Fla. – In their first season in the league, FIU claimed the American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship with a 2-0 win over South Florida on Sunday, November 13 at the FIU Soccer Stadium.
With the win, FIU (13-4-1) earn The American’s automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship. The selection show is Monday, November 14 at 1 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. South Florida moves to 8-6-4 in the loss.
Neither defense was allowing pressure in the early minutes of the first half. In the 25
th minute, Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro sent a cross into the box, deflecting off of the South Florida defender into the goal to put the Panthers up 1-0.
The Panthers added another goal using a corner kick. Carlos Scheckermann found David Garcia for a header in the 41
st minute to score the second goal of the match.
The Panther defense kept the clamps on the Bulls, allowing just one shot on goal the entire match. FIU outshot South Florida 7-1 in shots on goal.
Jackson Weyman had five saves in the in loss for the Bulls. For a second straight match, FIU allowed just one shot on goal, which Kevin Harr successfully saved.
