Memphis Advances to NCAA Third Round, UCF Falls in Penalties to No. 1 UCLA

Memphis advanced to the third round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship, while UCF battled No. 1 UCLA to a draw, but fell in penalties on Friday, November 18.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Memphis took down its second straight seeded opponent on Friday, defeating No. 7 seed Mississippi State, 4-0. 

The Tigers (11-5-5) moves on to the third round of the NCAA Championship for the first time and will take on No. 3 seed Arkansas on Sunday, November 20 at 6 p.m. Eastern in Fayetteville.

Sarola Miller opened the scoring for the Tigers in the 24th minute with a shot from outside the box. Mya Jones added Memphis' second goal in the 53rd off an assist from Momo Nakao. 

Grace Story made the lead three in the 60th minute, assisted by Miller. Anne-Valerie Seto concluded the scoring in the 83rd minute.

The Tigers led in shots 16-9. Claire Wyville made four saves in a clean sheet for Memphis.

LOS ANGELES -- UCF battled No. 1 UCLA to a 1-1 draw, but fell in a penalty shootout, 3-0, on Friday.

It was the third consecutive game that ended with a penalty shootout for the Knights (9-2-7). UCF fell in the American Athletic Conference Championship semifinals to Memphis in a shootout before defeating NC State in the first round.

Dayana Martin opened the scoring in the 35th minute on a curling shot that beat UCLA goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy, but the Bruins (18-2-1) responded less than three minutes later on a goal by Jackie Gilday. 

The two teams would go the rest of the regulation plus 20 minutes in overtime scoreless, prompting the shootout. UCF's Caroline DeLisle made a season-high nine saves, while Brzykcy made six for UCLA.

In the shootout, Brzykcy made a save on UCF's first attempt and then the Knights would hit the crossbar and the post on the next two attempts. UCLA made all three of their attempts to advance to the third round.
