Wichita State 72, Southern 42 – Box Score
WICHITA, Kan. – Behind a suffocating defensive effort, Wichita State cruised to a 72-42 win over Southern Friday night in Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State (9-2) remained undefeated at home this season and has won six straight home games dating back to last season. The 42 points and 26 percent shooting were both season lows for an opponent.
Jane Asinde led four Shockers in double figures with a game-high 15 points and 12 rebounds. It marked her fourth double-double of the season. Curtessia Dean added 13 points, four rebounds and three assists, while going 7-for-8 at the free throw line.
Shamaryah Duncan and Trajata Colbert rounded out the top scorers with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Shockers set season highs in field goal percentage (55 percent), free throws made (22) and attempted (32) and outrebounded the Jaguars by 18.
After making just four field goals in the first half, Southern finished the game 15-for-57 and went 8-for-12 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Wichita State's defense was flying around the first 10 minutes. The Shockers held Southern to just four points in the opening quarter on 2-of-17 shooting. Southern went scoreless the final 5:14, allowing the Shockers to build their lead behind a 13-0 run.
The Shockers' run reached as many as 20-0 in the opening minutes of the second quarter before a Southern layup snapped the drought.
With 2:00 minutes left in the first half, Asinde was outscoring Southern by herself, 10-9. Wichita State cruised into the half leading, 38-9. The nine first half points were the fewest allowed in the Keitha Adams era.
Wichita State outscored Southern 21-5 in the second quarter and shot 54 percent from the field. Defensively, Wichita State limited Southern to 4-of-30 from the field and 0-for-14 from three-point range.
Asinde led all scorers with 10 points to go with eight first half rebounds.
Southern was able to play an even third quarter, but Wichita State still led by 29 after 30 minutes.
Wichita State led by as many as 36 in the second half and never trailed on the night.
Temple 66, Duquesne 60 – Box Score
PHILADELPHIA - Temple point guard Aleah Nelson joined the 1,000 point club Friday night as the women's basketball team topped Duquesne 66-60 at the Liacouras Center. Nelson is the 26th Owls in program history to score 1,000 points.
Nelson led both teams with 33 points, while Ayanna Townsend led Duquesne with 19. With the win, the Owls improve to 5-6 while the Dukes fall to 8-3 on the season.
Both teams kept it close to open the game, with neither side holding more than a one-basket lead through the first media timeout. Duquesne took its largest lead of the game with 4:28 left on the clock, as a second chance layup from the Dukes put the team up four (12-8). The Owls answered with an 8-0 run capped by a Nelson three to give Temple a 16-12 lead. The Dukes would go on to score six of the final eight of the quarter to tie it 18-18 at the break.
Nelson broke the tie with her second three of the game, but Duquesne scored back-to-back buckets to retake the lead (22-21) at the 8:30 minute mark in the second quarter. Temple went back on top (26-22) after a Jalynn Holmes layup and Nelson trey, but four turnovers in under three minutes kept the Owls from running away with the game. Duquesne kept it close, but the Cherry and White was hot from behind the arc and went 3-of-3 in the final 2:28 to go up 35-28 at the half.
Tiarra East went 1-of-2 at the line to open the third quarter before Duquesne scored its first basket in nearly four minutes at 8:30 to cut Temple's lead to 36-30. Nelson scored her 1,000th point from long and a Jasha Clinton drained a pullup jumper to give the Owls their first double-figure lead of the game (40-30). The Dukes suffered another scoring drought, scoring just one point in nearly seven minutes. The Cherry and White went on a 13-1 run capped by a three from Holmes, giving Temple an 18-point lead (49-31) with just under three minutes left in the quarter. Tess Myers scored Duquesne's first basket in 11 attempts with 1:34 on the clock, and would go on to score seven of the last nine points of the quarter.
The Dukes scored three on a jumper and free throw in the first minute to cut Temple's lead to 10, 51-41. The Owls answered with a jumper and free throw of their own before Nelson scored a pair of free throws after a technical foul on the Duquesne bench with 7:57 left in the game. Duquesne went on a 9-1 run to put the score at 57-50, but another Nelson trey gave the Owls their 10-point lead back (60-50). Temple scored the final six points at the line, going 1-of-10 in the final five minutes of the game. The Dukes looked to mount a comeback in the final minutes, scoring 10 of the last 17, but couldn't overcome the deficit.
#22 Kansas 81, Tulsa 62 – Box Score
LAWRENCE - The Tulsa women's basketball team dropped an 81-62 decision to #22 Kansas on Friday night at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan. The Golden Hurricane fell to 8-3 on the season, while the Jayhawks moved to 10-0 overall.
Tulsa had four players in double digits, including a team-best 15 points by Jessika Evans, 14 by Temira Poindexter, 13 by Delanie Crawford and 10 by Maya Mayberry.
Tulsa will return to action on Monday, December 19 against Northwestern State beginning at 6:30 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
After missing their first four shots and trailing just 5-0, Tulsa's Temira Poindexter, Jessika Evans and Maya Mayberry all hit three's to put the Golden Hurricane up 9-7 with 6:13 on the clock in the first quarter. Mayberry's trey put in her in TU's record books for three-pointers made with 122.
Maya Mayberry scored on a layup to tie the game 11-11 with 5:04 on the clock, but the Jayhawks scored the next nine points to make it 20-11 with 2:24 to play in the frame and owned a 25-17 advantage at the end of the quarter.
The Golden Hurricane started the second quarter with a 10-1 run to take a 27-26 lead with 7:07 on the clock, forcing the Jayhawks to call a timeout. TU climbed to a 32-26 lead with 4:13 to play in the second quarter, holding the Jayhawks to just one point until Zakiyah Franklin hit a jumper with 3:11 on the clock. Tulsa had a 7-6 scoring advantage over Kansas to close out the first half with a 39-24 lead.
KU battled back, outscoring TU, 13-8, to start the third quarter and tie the contest at 47-all with 5:10 on the clock in the frame. The Jayhawks then put together a 12-3 run to close out the quarter with a 59-50 advantage with 10 minutes to play.
The Jayhawks outscored the Golden Hurricane 22-12 in the final frame to claim the 81-62 win.
