GREENVILLE, N.C. - Four East Carolina players had hat tricks and two Pirate goalies combined for 11 saves in a 17-7 win against Winthrop Friday afternoon at Johnson Stadium.
The Pirates improved to 2-0 on the young season, while Winthrop fell in its season-opener.
Frances Kimel led all scorers with seven points (3g, 4a) as the Pirates overcame an early 3-1 deficit to take control of the game with a 7-0 run in the first half.
The Pirates led 9-4 at halftime and Winthrop stayed within five goals of East Carolina midway through the fourth quarter before ECU picked up the final four goals of the game.
East Carolina had a 47-21 advantage in shots and an 18-8 margin in draw controls.
In addition to Kimel's hat trick, Nicole LeGar, Megan Tryniski and Leah Bestany scored three goals each.
Brynn Knight made four saves in the first half before yielding to Sophie Bandorick, who made seven stops.
