TAMPA (February 27, 2022) – The University of South Florida (4-2) put on an offensive clinic Sunday afternoon in a 17-2 romp to complete a three-game sweep of Stony Brook (1-5) at USF Baseball Stadium.
South Florida's 17 runs scored are the most since a 19-1 victory over Penn State on February 21, 2014.
Drew Brutcher, Daniel Cantu and Carmine Lane each homered on Sunday and combined for nine RBI. Brutcher doubled, homered and tallied a career-high five RBI – the first five-RBI game since Coco Montes on April 14, 2018.
Every USF batter to enter the game – 12 in total – recorded at least one hit. Bobby Boser registered his first collegiate hit – a double – and Sonny Rao also tallied his first hit – a two-run single in the eighth inning.
On the mound, Jack Cebert picked up his first collegiate win. The freshman right-hander did not allow a base runner over 1.1 IP in relief of Dylan Vega. Making his first start, and second appearance as a Bull, Vega allowed just one run on four hits and struck out three over 4.2 IP.

The Hawkeyes Brendan Sher hit a slow ground ball to first baseman Payton Tolle, who tossed to shortstop Andrew Stewart at second for the force out. Iowa runner Brayden Frazier went into second base standing, prompting the third base umpire to signal interference for a game-ending double play.
It was a fitting end for a game that featured 14 walks, seven hit batters, four balks, and 15 runs on only 14 hits. The Shockers (2-6) quickly fell into a 3-0 hole in the top of the first, as Iowa drew first blood on two bases-loaded balks and a sacrifice fly against WSU starter Will Stevens. An RBI double from Peyton Williams in the top of the second extended the Hawkeyes lead to 4-0.
