IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s soccer awards for the first week of the 2022 season, ending Sunday, August 28.
Offensive Player of the Week
Jose Ortiz, Jr., F. SMU
Ortiz got off to a blazing start to the 2022 campaign, as the junior came up with a hat trick in the Mustang’s 4-0 win over Oral Roberts. His first goal came just 20 seconds into the match, before he followed with his second goal nine minutes later. He finished off the night with a penalty kick in the 63
rd minute.
Defensive Player of the Week
Bryce Meredith, Sr., M, Memphis
Meredith anchored the Tigers defense that allowed just five combined shots on goal in matches against Queens and Charleston. The senior played the full 180 minutes as Memphis came away with a clean sheet against Queens and a draw against Charleston.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Eoin Gawronski, R-Jr., GK, Temple
Gawronski recorded five saves and his first clean sheet of the season in the 1-0 season opening win against Lehigh.
Rookie of the Week
Elton Hedstrom, Fr., F, SMU
In his first collegiate game, Hedstrom played 28 minutes and came through with a goal in the 42
nd minute against Oral Roberts as the Mustangs won their season opener 4-0.
Weekly Honor Roll
Brooks Rice, Gr., F, UAB
Rice scored two of the five UAB goals on the weekend and assisted on another as the Blazers came away with two shutout wins over Charleston (2-0) and Queens (3-0).
Brad Dildy, Fr., M, Charlotte
Dildy came through in his first career game, as the midfielder played 58 minutes and had his first career assist in the 49ers 3-1 win over UConn.
Alex Willis, GR., F, Charlotte
Willis was instrumental in the season opening win for the 49ers, finishing with one goal and one assist in the 3-1 win over UConn. His goal in the 51
st minute gave the 49ers the lead.
Victor Claudel, Sr., F, FAU
Claudel scored two second half goals for the Owls just eight minutes apart. His first came in the 53
rd minute before following up with another in the 61
st minute as FAU came away with a draw against Lynn.
Jackson Weyman, R-Sr, GK, South Florida
Weyman finished with 10 saves in two matches for the Bulls on opening weekend. He came away with a clean sheet in a draw against FGCU and finished with six saves, including three withing six yards of the goal, against No. 24 North Carolina.
Yann Kouemi, Sr., F, Temple
Kouemi put the Owls ahead at the 6:30 mark in the first half, which ended up being the determining goal in the game as Temple shutout Lehigh 1-0.
