PHILADELPHIA - Temple held Rutgers without an offensive touchdown, but three Scarlet Knight field goals and a defensive score were enough for a 16-14 win against the Owls Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field.
Jude McAtamney made field goals from 45, 25 and 38 yards, the last of which gave Rutgers a 16-7 lead five seconds into the fourth quarter.
Temple answered two plays later, however, on a 47-yard connection from E.J. Warner to tight end Jordan Smith, bringing the Owls within two. While Rutgers did not score on its next drive, the Scarlet Knights chewed up 7:54 on a 12-play possession, leaving Temple only one more possession to try and take the lead.
The Owls converted one fourth down on its last possession, but was unable to cash in on fourth-and-4 from their own 41 with 2:25 left, allowing Rutgers to take over and run out the clock.
Warner completed 19 of 32 passes for 215 yards, a touchdown and an interception in his first career start.
