No. 3 SMU Advances in American Women’s Soccer Quarterfinals with 2-1 Win over No. 6 Tulsa

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – No. 3 seed SMU defeated No. 6 seed Tulsa, 2-1, behind two goals from Nyah Rose in the third quarterfinal of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship Tuesday, October 31 at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
 
With the win, SMU (10-5-1) advances to the semifinals against the winner of No. 2 South Florida and No. 7 Florida Atlantic on Thursday, November 2 at 7 p.m. Eastern on ESPN+.
 
The first half was scoreless, but Tulsa (5-9-5) came closest in the 32nd minute when Jordan Frederick’s shot was saved off the line by SMU defender Mayu Inokawa.
 
In the 54th minute, Kaya Lee’s shot was saved off the line, but Rose pounced on the rebound to give SMU the lead. Rose doubled the lead in the 71st minute. The 2023 American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year now has 11 goals on the season and is tied for the most in The American with Memphis’ Saorla Miller.
 
Tulsa cut the lead to one in the 77th minute on a goal by Jordan Frederick, but the Mustang defense only allowed one shot on goal after the goal.
 
Sam Estrada made two saves for SMU, while Tatum Sanders recorded five saves for the Golden Hurricane.
