Tulsa 86, New Orleans 61 - Box Score
The Tulsa women (2-0) cruised to an 88-61 win over New Orleans (0-2) Friday afternoon in front of 2,258 fans on Education Day Monday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Temira Poindexter scored a career-high 30 points and Delanie Crawford added 22 for the Hurricane effort. Hadley Periman grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds. Poindexter finished the game 12-of-17 from the field, 3-of-7 from behind the arc and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe.
After a paultry first quarter shooting performance at 26 percent, the Hurricane rebounded to finish the game at 47.5 percent from the field, 36 percent from three-point range and 82.6 percent from the free throw line.
Tulsa took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Privateers 29-14, expanding a five-point halftime lead to 20 points after three periods. The Hurricane led by as many as 35 points at the 5:10 mark of the final quarter when Katelynn Levings knocked down a mid-level jumper.
In the second half, Tulsa put up 56 points to New Orleans 36 as the Hurricane converted 58 percent of its field goals, 42 percent from three-point range and 94 percent from the charity stripe.
Charlotte 84, Tennessee State 35 - Box Score
The Charlotte women's basketball team picked up their first win of the 2023-24 campaign with a dominant 84-35 win over the Tennessee State University Tigers.
Everything went right for the Niners offensively as they finished the afternoon shooting exactly 50% from the floor (34-68). Eight out of 18 three-pointers went in the basket, with Lawrence leading the team hitting all three of hers. Jewel Watkins and Jacee Busick each knocked down two.
Charlotte's great defensive effort limited Tennessee State to 20% shooting (11-54) and just 3-17 from behind the arc (17.6%). In the second half, the 49ers outscored the Tigers 46 to 14. As a team, the 49ers finished with 19 steals, their most in a single game since swiping 15 at Utah in 2016. Imani Smith finished with a team-high five steals, while Aylesha Wade and Olivia Porter had four apiece.
South Florida 67, Stetson 55 - Box Score
Sophomore wing Carla Brito posted a season-high 20-point and 11-rebound performance in South Florida women's basketball's (2-0), 67-55, win versus Stetson (0-2) on Friday afternoon at the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Fla.
Senior guard Maria Alvarez (18 points) finished the night with five boards and was the only Bull to join Brito in double-digits. Fourteen of Alvarez's 18 points came in the first half of action. Senior guard Aerial Wilson lent a helping hand with a game-high six assists.
UTSA 58, New Mexico State 55 - Box Score
On Friday, freshman Aysia Proctor dropped 19 points as the UTSA women's basketball team took down New Mexico State 58-55 for their first victory of the season in nonconference action at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners (1-1) bested the Aggies (0-2) as Proctor went 8-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. In addition to Proctor's success, senior Kyra White aided the offense, scoring 14 and hauling in eight boards, while sophomore Maya Linton logged nine points.
Freshman Idara Udo delivered another stellar performance on the glass, leading the contest with 11 rebounds, while senior Elyssa Coleman had a game-high four blocks.
An and-one for Linton and a three-pointer for White helped UTSA take an early 6-3 lead in the first quarter. NM State then embarked on an 8-0 run that allowed them to go up 13-6. The Roadrunners answered with an 8-0 surge of their own that was capped off by a trio of Proctor makes. With UTSA now holding a 15-13 advantage, the Aggies found the bottom of the net for a 15-15 tie at the conclusion of the period.
Coleman sunk a layup, and sophomore Sidney Love converted an and-one for a quick 20-15 edge to start the second stanza. Not to be deterred, NM State scored 16 of the following 20 points to earn a 31-24 advantage in a stretch that saw only Proctor and White log scores for UTSA. Linton converted one last layup before the teams headed to the locker room with the Aggies leading 31-26.
Coleman, Linton, and White all knocked down shots out of the break ahead of a Proctor three-pointer that gave UTSA a 35-33 advantage. The squads then exchanged blows before the 'Runners wrapped up the third quarter with four consecutive points for a 45-40 lead.
The battle raged on throughout the final frame, with an Udo jumper keeping the opposition at arm's length. The Aggies cut their deficit to one after knocking down a pair from the charity stripe, reflecting a 51-50 score line. Again, exchanging blows, an Aggie layup kept NM State in the fight as the game neared its conclusion. With UTSA up 56-55, White and Proctor each went 1-for-2 from the free throw line, giving the Aggies one more possession down 58-55. Tylie Jones loaded up a shot but couldn't get past Udo, who swatted it down and secured the Roadrunner's first victory of the season.
