North Texas 78, SFA 55
The UNT women's basketball team got back in the win column with a 78-55 road victory over Stephen F. Austin Thursday night.
Led by DesiRay Kernal's double double, the Mean Green picked up their first win in program history in Nacogdoches. In her second double double of the season, Kernal racked up 14 rebounds, including eight in the first half, to go along with 17 points. One of the nation's leaders in getting to the free throw line, Kernal went 13-of-13 from the charity stripe in the game. She is the first UNT player to shoot 100% from the free throw line with 13 attempts since Aly Gamez on Dec. 3, 2021.
Alabama 70, South Florida 41
South Florida women's basketball (3-1) fell to Alabama (4-0), 70-41, on Thursday night at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Freshman guard Vittoria Blasigh led the Bulls with 18 points in 39 minutes, which marked her 3rd double-digit performance of the season. Sophomore wing Carla Brito followed with eight points and matched a career-best 11 boards. Senior forward Evelien Lutje Schipholt finished the night with six boards, and has grabbed six or more rebounds in four straight contests.
Sarah Barker led the Crimson Tide with 25 total points, connecting on 10-of-13 field goals.
Georgia Tech 78, Rice 75
After leading nearly the entire game, the Rice women's basketball team fell in the closing minute in a hard-fought 78-75 defeat to Georgia Tech Thursday night at Tudor Fieldhouse. The loss drops Rice's record to 2-2 to open the season.
Destiny Jackson led the Owls with 13 points, two steals, two rebounds and an assist. Dominique Ennis added 11 points, three steals and two assists, while Malia Fisher finished with 11 points, three rebounds, a block, and an assist.
As a team, Rice shot 29-of-64 (45.3%) from the floor and 8-of-19 (42.1%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 9-of-12 (75.0%) shooting display from the free throw line. The Owls scored 29 points off of 17 Georgia Tech turnovers.
