No. 1 Memphis Defeats No. 5 Charlotte, 2-0, to Advance to American Women’s Soccer Championship Final

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – No. 1 seed Memphis defeated No. 5 seed Charlotte, 2-0, to advance to the final of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship Thursday evening, November 2, at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
 
With the win, Memphis (17-1-0) will face the winner of No. 3 SMU and No. 7 Florida Atlantic in the final on Sunday, November 5 at 2 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU.
 
American Rookie of the Year Anna Hauer opened the scoring in the 32nd minute of quick passes from Hanoka Hamano and Finley Lavin. Charlotte goalkeeper Emma Wakeman made six saves in the first half to keep the score at 1-0.
 
In the second half, the Tigers kept on the pressure and in the 80th minute Delaney Tellex was taken down in the penalty box. American Offensive Player of the Year Mya Jones stepped up and converted the penalty to push the lead to 2-0.
 
Wakeman ended up with 12 saves for the 49ers (9-7-4), while American Goalkeeper of the Year Kaylie Bierman recorded five saves for the Tigers.
