The UNT women's basketball team capped an undefeated trip to The Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic and improved to 6-1 on the season with a 71-50 win over North Dakota on Saturday.
With the win, Jason Burton passed Tina Slinker for the best start by a first-year head coach in program history. The 6-1 start also ties the best start to the season since the 2017-18 campaign.
UAB 74, Valparaiso 68
UAB Women's Basketball (4-1) shot a season-high 60 percent from the field in a 78-68 win over Valporaiso (0-4). Mia Moore led the Blazers with 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Four different Blazers finished in double figures, including freshman Jade Weathersby who finished with a career best 17 points. Kylee Schneringer scored 11 points while Maddie Walsh added 10.
Charlotte 50, George Washington 38
The Charlotte women's basketball team concluded the 2023 Discover Puerto Rico Shootout with a 50-38 win over George Washington on Saturday (Nov. 25).
Dazia Lawrence and Tracey Hueston each finished in double figures with 12 points on five made field goals. Jacee Busick made a difference on both ends of the floor, totaling eight points and eight rebounds. Freshman Fatou Diakite pulled in nine rebounds in just 11 minutes of action. As a team, Charlotte shot 19-49 (38.8%) on field goals and 4-15 (26.7%) from three-point land. The 49ers cut down on their turnovers today (15) which was a big story coming into the game.
UTSA 63, Sam Houston 56
The UTSA women’s basketball trailed by as much as 11 entering the fourth quarter before a 30-point final frame propelled the squad to a 63-56 victory win over Sam Houston inside the Johnson Coliseum on Saturday.
The Roadrunners (4-1) bested the Bearkats (3-2,) as the team shot 43% from the field and held the opposition to a 24.6% clip.
Senior Elyssa Coleman led the contest in points, scoring 17 on 61% shooting to go along with six rebounds. Joining Coleman in the double-digit point club, sophomore Sidney Love dropped 12 and senior Kyra White 14.
The ‘Runners collected 16 more rebounds than the opposition, largely thanks to freshman Aysia Proctor, who logged eight points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Additionally, Love hauled in seven boards as Coleman and sophomore Maya Linton collected six.
Tulsa 74, Clemson 64
The Tulsa women's basketball team began day two of the Van Chancellor Classic with a 74-64 victory over the Clemson Tigers in the Merrell Center Saturday night. The Golden Hurricane improved to 5-1 on the year, while the Tigers dropped to 4-3.
Tulsa erased an eight-point deficit in the second quarter and used a 23-10 scoring run in the third quarter to propel itself to its first win over an ACC program since the 2006 NCAA tournament (NC State, 71-61).
Virginia Tech 76, Tulane 70
Despite a season-high 26 points from Kyren Whittington and giving No. 9 Virginia Tech (5-1) all they could handle, Tulane's women's basketball team (3-3) fell on Saturday at John Gray Gymnasium in the team's second game at the Cayman Islands Classic in George Town in the Cayman Islands.
Whittington shot an efficient 9-for-13 from the field, 1-of-2 from three point range and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line. She also had two rebounds, two steals, an assist and five fouls drawn in the game. Hannah Pratt tallied 16 points and a rebound. Marta Galic picked up 12 points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal. Amira Mabry also reached double figures with 11 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Kalyah Rainey totaled three points and three assists. Irina Parau recorded six rebounds, two points and two assists. Joy Madison-Key tallied an assist and a rebound.
Dayton 74, Wichita State 63
Dayton dominated the battle of the boards as the Flyers defeated Wichita State, 74-63, Saturday morning at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center.
Dayton (4-3), ranked No. 31 in the nation in offensive rebounds coming into the game, outrebounded the Shockers (3-3) 50-27 with Arianna Smith tallying 19 rebounds by herself. The Flyers collected 20 offensive rebounds to the Shockers' 8.
Salese Blow scored a career-high 20 points to lead all scoring, and Tre'Zure Jobe tied her Division I career high with 16 points. Daniela Abies finished in double figures (10 pts) for the fifth-consecutive game as she and Ornella Niankan recorded a team-high 5 rebounds apiece.
Kennesaw State 57, Florida Atlantic 43
A slow start plagued Florida Atlantic women's basketball (3-2) as the Owls fell in a battle against the Kennesaw State Owls (2-3) on Saturday at KSU Convocation Center.
Aniya Hubbard and Mya Perry led the Owls against Kennesaw State. Hubbard scored a team-high 11 points, while also grabbing a team-leading seven boards, dishing out an assist, and collecting a steal. Perry scored 10 points, in addition to tallying a rebound, assist, and a steal.
SFA 67, Rice 56
After a third-quarter comeback brought the Owls within two to start the final quarter, the Rice women's basketball team fell on the road to Stephen F. Austin 67-56 Saturday afternoon.
Destiny Jackson led the Owls with 13 points, five rebounds and two assists, while Kennedy Clifton finished with 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Malia Fisher added 10 points with five rebounds and two assists while Shelby Hayes also had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
As a team, Rice shot 19-of-64 (29.7%) and 1-of-16 (6.3%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 17-of-21 (81.0%) showing from the free throw line.
Harvard 80, SMU 67
The SMU women's basketball team fell to Harvard 80-67 in the finale of the San Diego Classic on Saturday afternoon in Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Tiara Young led the Mustangs with 17 points. The graduate guard grabbed eight rebounds and passed out three assists. Tamia Jones scored in double-digits for the second straight day. Jones finished with 14 points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists. TK Pitts added 11 points, three rebounds, and two steals.
Chantae Embry tallied five points, three rebounds, two assists, and a steal, while Jessica Peterson scored four points and grabbed five boards. Reagan Bradley finished with two points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Jiya Perry added four points, a rebound, and a steal. Senior guard Maya Chandler chipped in eight points.
Texas 76, South Florida 44
South Florida women's basketball (5-3) lost, 76-44, to No. 12/12 Texas (7-0) in the Paradise Jam finale on Sunday night in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Vittoria Blasigh (10-points) and Romi Levy (10-points) combined for a total of 20 points on the night, while Carla Brito added nine points.
