East Carolina 91, Ferrum 61
GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Brandon Johnson's 29 points helped East Carolina defeat D-III member Ferrum 91-61 in a season opener on Monday night.
Johnson added nine rebounds for the Pirates. Ezra Ausar scored 13 points while shooting 3 of 4 from the field and 7 for 10 from the line, and added five rebounds and three steals. Kalib LaCount shot 3 of 4 from the field and 4 for 6 from the line to finish with 11 points.
The Panthers were led in scoring by Jikari Johnson, who finished with 19 points. Ferrum also got 18 points and two steals from Alfredo Abel-Rivera. Kyree Ellis also had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Charlotte 69, Maine 52
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Nik Graves scored 15 points as Charlotte beat Maine 69-52 to open the season on Monday night.
Graves added five rebounds for the 49ers. Dishon Jackson shot 6 for 12, including 1 for 3 from beyond the arc to add 13 points. Lu'Cye Patterson was 3 of 6 shooting and 5 of 9 from the free throw line to finish with 11 points.
AJ Lopez finished with 13 points for the Black Bears. Maine also got nine points and three steals from Ja'Shonte Wright-McLeish. Peter Filipovity also had seven points.
Temple 85, UMES 65
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Hysier Miller scored 17 points as Temple beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 85-65 in a season opener on Monday night.
Miller also had five assists for the Owls. Jahlil White scored 15 points and added 14 rebounds. Zion Stanford had 14 points and finished 7 of 10 from the floor.
Chace Davis finished with 15 points for the Hawks. Maryland-Eastern Shore also got 11 points from Devon Ellis. In addition, Damani Claxton finished with 10 points, four assists and two steals.
Wichita State 76, Lipscomb 59
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Colby Rogers had 20 points in Wichita State's 76-59 victory against Lipscomb on Monday night.
Rogers added six rebounds for the Shockers. Isaac Abidde scored 13 points and added five rebounds. Xavier Bell had 12 points and was 5-of-11 shooting and 2 of 3 from the free-throw line.
AJ McGinnis finished with 17 points for the Bisons (0-1, Atlantic Sun Conference). Lipscomb also got 12 points from Derrin Boyd. In addition, Dylan Faulkner had eight points and two steals.
Memphis 94, Jackson State 77
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Jaykwon Walton had 19 points in Memphis' 94-77 season-opening victory against Jackson State on Monday night.
Walton added five rebounds and three steals for Memphis. David Jones scored 15 points while going 5 of 12 (4 for 7 from 3-point range). Jordan Brown had 11 points and shot 5 of 7 from the field and 1 for 3 from the line.
Jackson State was led by Ken Evans, who recorded 18 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Chase Adams added 16 points and four assists for Jackson State. In addition, Coltie Young had 13 points.
UTSA 78, Western Illinois 68 (OT)
SAN ANTONIO (AP) Christian Tucker scored 18 points to help UTSA defeat Western Illinois 78-68 in overtime on Monday night.
Tucker also added eight assists for the Roadrunners. Trey Edmonds scored 15 points and added eight rebounds. Carlton Linguard was 4 of 9 shooting (2 for 5 from 3-point range) to finish with 12 points, while adding 10 rebounds.
James Dent Jr. finished with 20 points and seven rebounds for the Leathernecks. Shay Davis added 12 points and two blocks for Western Illinois. Jesiah West also recorded 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Dent made a long 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
Tulsa 70, Centra Arkansas 53
TULSA, Okla. (AP) Cobe Williams' 13 points helped Tulsa defeat Central Arkansas 70-53 on Monday night in a season opener.
Williams was 5-of-13 shooting (2 for 9 from 3-point range) for the Golden Hurricane. PJ Haggerty added 12 points while shooting 3 for 13 (1 for 6 from 3-point range) and 5 of 7 from the free-throw line and also had six rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Isaiah Barnes shot 4 of 8 from the field and 3 for 3 from the line to finish with 11 points, while adding six rebounds.
The Bears were led in scoring by Carl Daughtery Jr., who finished with 19 points and six rebounds. Central Arkansas also got 19 points from Elias Cato.
SMU 82, Southwestern Assemblies of God 63
DALLAS (AP) Zhuric Phelps had 24 points in SMU's 82-63 win against Southwestern Assemblies on Monday night in a season opener.
Phelps also added five assists for the Mustangs. Chuck Harris scored 16 points while shooting 6 for 10, including 2 for 5 from beyond the arc, and added three steals. Tyreek Smith shot 4 of 11 from the field and 4 for 6 from the line to finish with 12 points while adding 10 rebounds.
The Lions were led by Kylon Owens, who posted 16 points and nine rebounds. CJ Hall added 12 points, four assists and two blocks for Southwestern Assemblies. In addition, CJ Kelley finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
Tulane 91, Nicholls 81
NEW ORLEANS (AP) Kolby King had 22 points in Tulane's 91-81 season-opening victory against Nicholls State on Monday night.
King also had three steals for the Green Wave. Sion James scored 21 points while going 7 of 16 from the floor, including 1 for 7 from 3-point range, and 6 for 6 from the line, and added five rebounds and four steals. Collin Holloway was 9 of 13 shooting and 2 of 3 from the free throw line to finish with 20 points.
The Colonels were led by Jamal West, who recorded 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Nicholls State also got 14 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks from Mekhi Collins. Diante Smith also had 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Bradley 73, UAB 71 (OT)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Malevy Leons scored 24 points and Darius Hannah hit the game-winning layup with three seconds remaining in the overtime as Bradley knocked off UAB 73-71 in a season opener on Monday night.
Leons also added 14 rebounds and three steals for the Braves. Duke Deen scored 15 points while going 4 of 9 from the floor, including 4 for 8 from 3-point range, and 3 for 3 from the line. Hannah went 7 of 11 from the field to finish with 14 points, while adding six rebounds and five assists.
Javian Davis led the Blazers in scoring, finishing with 20 points, 15 rebounds and four steals. Eric Gaines added 16 points and three steals for UAB. In addition, Christian Coleman had 11 points and eight rebounds.
