UAB 73, Nicholls 62
A dominant third quarter in which the Blazers did not miss a shot lifted the UAB women's basketball team to a 73-62 victory over Nicholls on Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gymnasium in Louisiana.
With the scored tied 32-32 at halftime, UAB shot 11-of-11 from the floor in the third quarter and outscored Nicholls 31-13 to take full control of the game.
The win improves UAB to 7-2 overall and dropped Nicholls to 6-5.
Mia Moore tallied her fourth double-double of the season while leading the Blazers in points (19) and rebounds (12). She paced three players in double figures as Tracey Bershers added 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range and Maddie Walsh added a season-high 15 points.
UAB made a season-high 13 3-pointers and shot 48 percent from deep (13-of-27). The Blazers played with the lead for 34 minutes.
North Texas 84, Alcorn State 50
The UNT women's basketball team secured the best start through 10 games in program history with a dominating 84-50 win over Alcorn State on Saturday inside The Super Pit.
The victory moved North Texas to 9-1 on the season in Jason Burton's first year as head coach. It also extended the team's win streak to seven games, marking the longest run since the 2000-01 team started with eight straight wins to open the season.
Making her second start of the season, Dyani Robinson provided an instant spark to the UNT offense that had struggled to get going early in its past two games. Robinson dished out five assists in the first half, while each of the Mean Green starters scored in the first quarter.
Shamaryah Duncan and DesiRay Kernal led the way for the Mean Green with 19 points each. For Duncan, it was a career high that surpassed her previous mark of 18 points from her time at Wichita State. Kernal added 10 rebounds to earn her fifth double double of the season and her second in-a-row.
#23 Gonzaga 80, Rice 72
The Rice women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 80-72 loss to No. 23 Gonzaga Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls fall to 5-4 with two more games remaining in the non-conference schedule.
Destiny Jackson led the Owls with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting with three rebounds and three assists, while Dominique Ennis added another 14 points with two rebounds and a steal. Malia Fisher netted 13 points with two rebounds, while Shelby Hayes rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points, six rebounds and an assist.
As a team, Rice shot 29-of-64 (45.3%) from the floor and 3-of-18 (16.7%) from three-point range. The Owls forced 15 Gonzaga turnovers, scoring 11 points off those turnovers. Rice scored 48 bench points compared to 36 from the Bulldogs.
