UTSA Rallies Past Marshall 35-17 To Win Scooter's Coffee Frisco Bowl

12.20.23

FRISCO, Texas - Owen McCown passed for 251 yards and two touchodwns to lead UTSA to its first bowl win in program history as the Roadrunners scored the last 21 points in a 35-17 win against Marshall in the Scooter's Coffee Frisco Bowl at Toyota Stadium.

McCown was announced as the starter just before gametime as seventh-year standout Frank Harris was sidelined with a shoulder injury sustained during the Roadrunners' regular-season finale against Tulane in November.

McCown shook off some first-quarter rust, in which he went just 1-for-6 with two interceptions, to go 21-of-25 for 250 yards and two TDs in the final three periods.

Joshua Cephus had seven receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown as the leading receiver among the 10 UTSA players with at least one reception.

The Roadrunner defense, meanwhile, was stout throughout the game as UTSA limited Marshall to 13 first downs and 5-of-18 efficiency on third down while registering six sacks and nine tackles for lost yardage.

Marshall quarterback Cole Pennington went 15-for-33 for 258 yards, while Rasheen Ali had 92 rushing yards, including a 64-yard touchdown, before he was sidelined in the second half.

The win for UTSA (9-4) was its first in five bowl appearances and it capped a stretch of eight wins in nine games to close the 2023 season.

Marshall (6-7), which began the season with a four-game winning streak, went 2-7 down the stretch.
