BOSTON - Quarterback Thomas Castellanos had two fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns as Boston College rallied past SMU 23-14 in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl Thursday at Fenway Park.
Castellanos, who began his career in the American Athletic Conference at UCF, helped the Eagles overcome a 17-14 fourth-quarter deficit with his 15-yard TD run with 12:22 left and an insurance touchdown with 9:48 to play.
SMU had held Boston College, which was playing about three miles from its Chestnut Hill campus, to only 191 yards of offense through three quarters, but the Eagles reeled off 173 yards in the final 15 minutes to finish the season at 7-6.
The Boston College defense, meanwhile, held SMU scoreless in the second half.
SMU had taken a 14-10 lead just before halftime when Kevin Jennings hit running back Jaylan Knighton for a 6-yard touchdown with eight seconds left in the second quarter.
The Mustangs threatened to make it a seven-point lead in the third, but a missed field goal ended a drive that consumed 15 plays, 60 yards and more than six minutes.
Castellanos finished with 258 yards of total offense as he rushed for 156 yards and the two TDs and completed 11 of 18 passes for 102 yards. Running back Kye Robichaux had 89 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries for the Eagles, who ended a three-game slide and earned its first win in Bowl Season since 2016.
Jennings, who was making his second consecutive start in place of the injured Preston Stone, went 24-for-48 for 191 yards and a touchdown and had a team-high 51 rushing yards for the Mustangs, who finish the season at 11-3. SMU was looking for its first bowl win since 2012.
