Rice 84, Corpus Christi 56
The Owls took control early and never looked back as the Rice women's basketball team led wire-to-wire en route to an 84-56 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday afternoon. The win moves Rice's record to 5-3 to start the season.
Dominique Ennis led the Owls with 14 points, with four rebounds and a block while Jazzy Owens-Barnett added 13 points and two steals. Maya Bokunewicz finished with 12 points, with four three-pointers, while adding three assists and two rebounds. Hailey Adams finished with a career-high 11 points, three rebounds, two blocks and two assists. Shelby Hayes rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points, a career-high five assists, three rebounds, two steals and a block.
As a team, Rice shot 28-of-61 (45.9%) from the floor and 10-of-26 (38.5%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 18-of-21 (85.7%) showing from the free throw line. The Owls held the Islanders to just 19-of-53 (35.8%) shooting from the floor and 3-of-16 (18.8%) from three. Rice forced 21 turnovers, scoring 20 points off those turnovers.
East Carolina 59, Coppin State 51
East Carolina women's basketball team battled past Coppin State, 59-51, on Saturday afternoon in Minges Coliseum. Micah Dennis set the tone for the Pirates, finishing with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists, but more importantly a steady presence at the point in what turned out to be a hard-fought win.
Danae McNeal recorded 17 points, three rebounds and five steals, three of which came in the final quarter. The guard was a key cog in the Pirates' ramped-up second-half pressure defense and her efforts sparked others as the team went on to force 11 turnovers in the fourth quarter alone. McNeal also surpassed 150 steals in a Pirate uniform and now rests at 152, knocking on the door of the top 10 in program history.
Memphis 100, Troy 88
The University of Memphis women's basketball team returned to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse for the first time in nearly three weeks to take on Troy University. The Tiger offense exploded for triple-digits today in route to a 100-88 win. Following today's win, Memphis moves to 3-5 overall.
Madison Griggs led all scorers with 22 points while going 7-15 from the field. Kai Carter, Ki'Ari Cain and Destyne Jackson all reached double-figure scoring while Alasia Smith picked up a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Memphis shot light's out today at 48 percent from the field and 43 percent from long range. On the defensive end, the Tigers forced Troy into 22 turnovers.
UTSA 90, UTEP 66
On Sunday, the UTSA women's basketball team put on a clinic, using a career-high 23 points by senior Elyssa Coleman to take down UTEP, 90-66, in nonconference action inside the Convocation Center. The win represents the first time the 'Runners have scored 90 points since a 97-47 win over Sul Ross State on Nov. 10, 2017. Additionally, the 24-point win represents the largest margin of victory in the Karen Aston era at UTSA.
The Roadrunners (5-3) dominated the Miners (4-5), leading wire-to-wire as Coleman shot an incredibly efficient 11-for-13, helping the team go 58% from the field. The squad also sunk eight three-pointers for their highest total of the season.
Joining Coleman in the double-digit points club, sophomore Sidney Love posted 16 points, marking her sixth straight game achieving the feat, while classmate Siena Guttadauro and senior Kyra White each charted 12.
VCU 57, Charlotte 49
The Charlotte women's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest on the road on Saturday (Dec. 2) against the VCU Rams by a score of 57-49.
Dazia Lawrence was the lone double figure scorer for the 49ers with 17 points on 7-17 shooting from the floor and 2-4 from behind the arc. Tracey Hueston, Keanna Rembert, and Imani Smith all had six points each. As a team, CLT shot 17-54 (31.5%) and 4-15 (26.7%) from three-point land. Smith set a season high with eight rebounds, while Jewel Watkins tied her season high with six.
Pacific 79, Temple 78
The Temple women's basketball team (3-5) fell in the second game of the Briann January Classic, 79-78 to the Pacific Tigers (5-3). The Owls will go 1-1 in the event after taking down Xavier, 78-41 yesterday. Temple rallied from being down by as many as 16 points to trim the lead to just one point with seven seconds remaining. Aleah Nelson missed what would have been the game winning basket with four seconds left on the clock.
Five Owls scored in double figures (East, Nelson, Piper, Tucker, and Washington). It is the third time this season five or more players have scored 10 plus points and the second consecutive game at least four have reached double figures. Nelson led Temple in scoring with 17 and passed for a game-high eight assists.
Auburn 72, UAB 62
A cold shooting night hindered the UAB women's basketball team as the Blazers suffered a 72-62 loss to Auburn on Sunday at Bartow Arena.
The Blazers (6-2) shot just 29.5% from the floor (18-of-61) and was 7-of-24 from behind the arc. Auburn (6-2) shot 47% for the game and outscored the Blazers 23-8 in the second quarter which ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.
Freshman Jade Weathersby tied her career high with 17 points to lead three Blazers in double figures. Demin DeShields added 16 and Tracey Breshers had 13. Weathersby has now scored double figures in each of her last four games.
